Still, it does give you the same quality gameplay the series is known for and you'll enjoy your time with your new crew, even if they're no replacement for the originals. CGMagazine - Chris Carter - 7 / 10 (XB1) At times, Mass Effect: Andromeda can feel like an expansion and not a true follow-up. COGconnected - Paul Sullivan - 88 / 100 (PS4) The fantastic combat and strong story points far outweigh the technical missteps and more cringeworthy moments. Destructoid - Brett Makedonski - 6. 5 / 10 (XB1) Mass Effect: Andromeda spends a lot of time not really feeling like a Mass Effect game. If anything, it feels like a spin-off. the sort of thing created by another studio that's unsure about what direction to take it. Like in the game itself, there are problems with the atmosphere. But Andromeda is very clear that it doesn't aim to be like the other Mass Effects. New beginnings, not funerals. for better and for worse. GameSpot - Scott Butterworth - 6 / 10 (PS4) In many ways, Andromeda feels like a vision half-fulfilled. It contains a dizzying amount of content, but the quality fluctuates wildly. Its worlds and combat shine, but its writing and missions falter- and the relative strength of the former is not enough to compensate for the inescapable weakness of the latter. As a Mass Effect game, Andromeda falls well short of the nuanced politics, morality, and storytelling of its predecessors. For me, the series has always been about compelling characters and harrowing choices, so to find such weak writing here is bitterly disappointing. Yet even after 65 hours, I still plan on completing a few more quests. The game can't escape its shortcomings, but patient explorers can still find a few stars shining in the darkness. GamesRadar. Andy Hartup - 3. 5 / 5 stars Andromeda provides an interesting premise and story, but is let down by poor combat, excessive padding, and over-complication Gaming Nexus - Kinsey Danzis - 8. 8 / 10 (XB1) Mass Effect: Andromeda doesnt quite live up to the hype, but it comes close. Considering the situation in which the developers found themselves, they put out an addition to the franchise that really feels like returning home even though youre millions of light years from Earth. With stunning scenery, a distinct Mass Effect feel, and an abundance of things to do, its a worthy investment for any Mass Effect veteran or newcomer—but dont expect it to be perfect. Hardcore Gamer - Adam Beck - 3. 5 / 5 (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda is an unbalanced experience. PC Gamer - Chris Thursten - 80 / 100 (PC) Marred by inconsistency and in need of a polish pass, this vast new sci-fi frontier nonetheless rewards dedicated exploration. PlayStation Universe - Kyle Prahl - 8 / 10 (PS4) Andromedas first adventure is plagued by frustrations. But memorable characters, a satisfying story, and deep RPG systems ultimately win the day. Press Start - James Mitchell - 9 / 10 (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda manages to successfully bring back the sense of exploration and discovery that fans have longed for since the original Mass Effect, whilst honing and improving the already enjoyable combat mechanics of Mass Effect 3. The result is something truly special – a metaphorical slow burn, a hybrid that is sure to appeal to fans of both the original game and its flashier sequels. Despite this, Andromeda is hampered slightly by its lack of visual polish and presentation, which can kill the wonder and fantasy as quickly as it builds it. USgamer - Kat Bailey - 3 / 5 stars (PS4) Mass Effect Andromeda falls short of its predecessors, but it's still a competently executed open-world action RPG with an interesting world and tons of quests to complete. Its biggest shame is that it doesn't make better use of its setting, opting instead to go with more of the same. Hopefully BioWare will be more ambitious when it comes time for the inevitable sequel. Xbox Achievements - Richard Walker - 80% XB1) You might initially turn your nose up at Mass Effect: Andromeda, but stick with it and you'll be richly rewarded with a vast space opera that gets better and better. It has problems, but they pale into insignificance once you're swept up in the exploits of Mass Effect: Andromeda's Pathfinder. Stevivor - Steve Wright - 9. 5 / 10 (XB1) Savour the experience, boys and girls, and delight in carefully-placed groundwork that will ensure more adventures to come… and hopefully more for your twin to do. Eurogamer - Edwin Evans-Thirlwell - Unscored (PS4) It's gripping stuff, and a reminder of the greatness of the Mass Effect trilogy - its intelligent reworkings of pulp sci-fi cliche, the taut splendour of its scenarios and aesthetic, the colour and dexterity of its writing. All that's still in here somewhere, I think. But then you pop out the other end of the mission, back into Andromeda's labyrinth of drudgery and obfuscation, and remember that you're a long way from home. GamingTrend - Travis Northup - 80 / 100 (XB1) Mass Effect Andromeda is a return to the original Mass Effect game in ways both good and bad. Interesting characters, solid gameplay and RPG mechanics, and the revival of the open-world elements of the series will immerse and delight longtime fans. However, wooden characters, a light story, and plenty of glitches hold this title back from fulfilling its full potential. Catherine Daro - 8. 7 / 10 Mass Effect: Andromeda is a very solid game. BioWare had obviously taken their lessons both from original Mass Effect trilogy as well as Dragon Age series and mixed it with fair dose of experience of other AAA titles of late. It is not Inquisition in space, although the influence of it is clearly seen. RPG Fan - Derek Heemsbergen - 78% PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda presents plenty of great ideas, but these tend to be either aped too closely from its predecessors or buried under issues that are surmountable yet frustrating all the same. Metro GameCentral - GameCentral - 6 / 10 (PS4) What could have been an all-time classic action role-player is let down by a surprisingly poor script and unengaging characters. TheSixthAxis - Dominic Leighton - 8 / 10 (PS4, PC) I found it hard to be excited during the opening hours of Mass Effect: Andromeda. It feels too safe, too much like whats gone before, but then it clicks. Theres a moment where the galaxy opens up and you find yourself embarking once more on a huge mission across compelling, beautifully constructed planets, surrounded by memorable characters. Sadly the glut of technical missteps serve to cheapen proceedings, but this is still an adventure you dont want to miss out on. PlayStation LifeStyle - Keri Honea - 6. 5 / 10 (PS4) With the vast love of the Mass Effect series, Andromeda was never going to make people 100% happy, the same way the ME3 ending didnt make people happy. The BioWare team put so many great things in place, but the main story, the characters, and most of the writing keep the game from being great. Sadly, technical mess keeps it from being good. Shacknews - Brittany Vincent - 6 / 10 (PC) Unfortunately, Mass Effect: Andromeda is a frustrating mess of bad design decisions, bugs, glitches, and narrative missteps. It could have been so much more, but it ends up falling flat on its face. While there are things to enjoy about it, they're few and far between. your time is much better served replaying the original trilogy or exploring the widely available mods out there. You'll end up being much more fulfilled and feeling as though you've used your time in a productive manner. Polygon - Arthur Gies - 7. 5 / 10 (PS4, XB1) But its my time with the cast that Im still thinking about, and the mysteries about the world that havent been answered that make me feel like Im waiting once again for a new Mass Effect game. And if Im judging a game by where it leaves me, Andromeda succeeds, even if it stumbled getting there. Ars Technica - Lee Hutchinson - Early Review (PC) If you are a die-hard Mass Effect fan who has a personal Shepard head-cannon, Andromeda is an insta-buy, no questions asked. It's the first Mass Effect game we've gotten in five years and potentially the starting point for a new series. It has many of the same traits that made the original Mass Effect trilogy great, and it feels right. If youre not a die-hard Mass Effect fan, watch some YouTube videos first to make sure the game will be for you. Post Arcade (National Post. Chad Sapieha - 8. 5 / 10 (PS4) But for each hour I spent participating in humdrum combat I spent at least two or three engaged in thought provoking conversation or exploring strange new environments, learning more and more about the fascinatingly complex web of worlds, people, and problems that BioWares writers have woven. Thats why I play Mass Effect games. And its why Mass Effect: Andromeda, like its predecessors, is a blissfully easy recommendation for anyone looking for more than just another run-of-the-mill shoot em up set in space. RPG Site - Andrea Shearon - 7 / 10 (PS4, PC) Ryders tale feels like a solid beginning to something new. It needs more than a little polish, and probably some extensive work under the hood, but Andromeda has reassured me Mass Effect can exist without the Citadel, Earth, Shepard or even Ryder. This new galaxy left me with more questions than answers, but Im okay with that. I hope another entry to the series means more exploration into every corner of humanitys new home. AngryCentaurGaming - Jeremy Penter - Rent (PC) This is actually a 'Rent' or 'Deep, Deep Sale' on PC. The game has enough issues that right now there is no way I feel comfortable telling people to run out and get it. Because sure it can offer 60 hours, but I can flick my nuts for 60 hours, but it doesn't mean I want to. IGN - Dan Stapleton - 7. 7 / 10 (XB1, PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda only occasionally recaptures the series' brilliance, but delivers a vast and fun action-RPG. Forbes - Paul Tassi - 8. 5 / 10 (PS4) I have a feeling that Mass Effect fans will enjoy the game, but I don't think anyone will claim it outclasses the original trilogy, outside of maybe the very first game. If you could combine the story and memorable quests of the originals with the combat, visuals and scope of Andromeda, you would have the perfect video game, though I think what's offered here will satisfy most. Rock, Paper, Shotgun - John Walker - Unscored (PC) As a follow-up to the previous trilogy, it's a timid and tepid tale too heavily reliant on what came before, too unambitious for what could have been, trapped in a gargantuan playground of bits and pieces to do. Digital Trends - Phil Hornshaw - 2. 5 / 5 stars (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda often comes off like a giant checklist of Mass Effect–themed content, but what it's missing is the wonder and excitement that made the last Mass Effect games feel special. The previous games had their issues, but combined their elements to create a vast, interesting world full of deep characters with conflicting desires and experiences that made us feel connected to it. Critical Hit - Geoffrey Tim - 8 / 10 (PS4) Mass Effect Andromeda is a fresh start – but in borrowing liberally from the first game its made many of the same mistakes. In spite of them, its an exciting space adventure that delivers everything thats become important to Mass Effect: Great characters, fun exploration and a climactic tale of good vs evil. Game Revolution - Aron Garst - 3. 5 / 5 stars (PS4) Although familiar in some regards, this is a positive in Andromedas case. Though, a truly successful revival needs to be innovative, not repetitive, and Andromeda often falls into a trap of tedium. It's a shame because it could have been so much more. Fenix Bazaar - Gaetano Prestia - 8 / 10 (XB1) Mass Effect: Andromeda is an important first step for a franchise looking to enter into a new generation. It might get off on the wrong foot, but some crafty navigation quickly gets it back on track. Video Game Sophistry - 6 / 10 (PS4) Ultimately, there is a lot of fun to be had here. There are moments here that matter, but this game requires that confluence of idea to really shine, it needs a thesis. Great art needs to tell a story in it, and subjectively if you found something beautiful in this I understand, but there is objectively some problems with this masterpiece that make me want to go back to the Milky Way galaxy, find my crew, and never go to Andromeda. God is a Geek - Chris White - 8. 5 / 10 (PS4) A welcome return to Biowares space opera, introducing great characters, an interesting story and some fantastic designs, always providing things to do. Areajugones - Antonio Vallejo. T - Spanish - 9 / 10 (PC) Mass Effect: Andromeda is a great project by BioWare and it is a stunning experience. Amazing narrative and plot, a true feeling of exploration and a very dynamic combat system. Even though its animations may not be the best ones, this game offers hours and hours of action and entertainment. Arcade Sushi - Luke Brown - 7 / 10 (XB1) Bioware brought a lot more planets, combat, exploration and mechanics to the table this time around, but more isn't always better. There may be no stronger case for keeping things simple than Mass Effect Andromeda. IGN Spain - José L. Ortega - Spanish - 8. 5 / 10 (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda is a great game, but far from being perfect. It will satisfy the expectations of the fans but fails on delivering a master piece with errors in almost every aspect of the game. GameInformer - Joe Juba - 8 / 10 (PS4) When taken as its own journey (and not in comparison to Shepards saga) Mass Effect: Andromeda is fun, and the important parts work. The narrative isnt astounding, but keeps you invested and drives you forward. The combat is entertaining whether you're in single-player or multiplayer. The crew isn't my favorite, but I like them and they have some good moments. Even with its other problems, these are the largest forces shaping your experience with Mass Effect: Andromeda, and they make it worth playing. At the same time, I was often left looking through a haze of inconveniences and dreaming about the game it could have been. GameMAG - xtr - Russian - 7 / 10 (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda has many noticeable problems, including strange animation, ugly characters, logically incomplete quests and numerous minor flaws. But this game offers an interesting main plot, nice RPG system and a huge world where you can explore different planets, solve puzzles, fight giant monsters, uncover secrets of the universe and participate in the colonization of deep space. Of course, this is not the Mass Effect we wanted, but a very large and interesting game, which significantly extends the known universe. GamesBeat - Jeff Grubb - 55 / 100 (PC) Games have to fit into our lives, and that's not always fair. Mass Effect: Andromeda might've worked a decade ago on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but it doesn't work in a world that is delivering games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In this reality, BioWare's latest role-playing game is old, broken, and often boring. Worst of all, it's going to disappoint fans of the Mass Effect series. GamePro - Rae Grimm - German - 87 / 100 (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda is a gigantic Sci-Fi epic and brave restart for the series, that doesn't reach the magic of its predecessors. M3 - Niklas Alicki - Swedish - 5 / 10 (XB1) Bioware's highly anticipated space adventure sadly fails to deliver on some critical points. Wonky animations, a boring set of characters and so-so story elements have officially de-railed the hype train for Mass Effect: Andromeda. GamePlanet - Matt Maguire - 8 / 10 (XB1) Mass Effect: Andromeda is a paradox: it's both disappointing and excellent. A mammoth title, it delivers tons of great content, but hamstrings itself with a poor first few hours, a few horrible systems, and some uninspired scenarios. Even so, it's pretty great! IGN Italy - Francesco Destri - Italian - 7. 8 / 10 (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda is disappointing in many aspects (not just the visual ones) even if sci-fi mood, exploration, crafting and multiplayer are well done. GameSpace - Suzie Ford - 8. 5 / 10 (PC) Whether its the combat system that is both new and familiar or multiplayer with its improvements or the interesting variety of quests or the epic score that screams Mass Effect, it all gels together into a whole. Ryders galaxy is as well-suited to her as the Milky Way was for Shepard. If were lucky, there are a lot more adventures in store for Ryder and her crew. LevelUp - Luis Sánchez - 7. 5 / 10 (PC) Mass Effect: Andromeda is a game that forgot how to be a Mass Effect game. While it fails to deliver a compelling narrative and has little to offer, Its the combat and planetary exploration the element that holds together this contrasting experience. The result is a game drifting away in the open and cold space. DualShockers - Giuseppe Nelva - 7. 5 / 10 (PS4) Perhaps Mass Effect Andromeda will serve as a wake-up call for BioWare, letting them realize that its time to evolve beyond the change of setting and cast. In the meanwhile, were still given a game that might not be the monumental fresh start that the masses expected, but is still a quite solid experience than many will enjoy. Atomix - Alberto Desfassiaux - Spanish - 85 / 100 (PS4) Despite its problems with the facial animations, Mass Effect Andromeda is a great entry of one of the must beloved franchises of all time. Great side quests, a compiling story, memorable characters, a solid combat system, decisions that matters and a deep atmosphere, makes this game a must have to every SciFi fan. GamingBolt - Rashid Sayed - 8 / 10 (PS4) Despite its vague links to the trilogy, Mass Effect: Andromeda can largely be described as a soft reboot for the series. For the most part, this has worked out really well for Bioware, giving them a launching pad to take the story ahead in future installments. The game is not without its problems, but the wealth of content on offer here will suck you right into the experience. We Got This Covered - Edward Love - 3. 5 / 5 stars (PS4) Good? Yes. Great? No. This new Mass Effect is full of stuff to do, but it's a game that's been designed by consensus, not conviction. PCMag - Gabriel Zamora - 3. 5 / 5 stars (PC) Despite its rougher edges, Mass Effect: Andromeda is a fine third-person shooter that features terrific space exploration. If you can overlook the clunky menus and graphics issues, you're in for some fun space hijinks. Kotaku - Patricia Hernandez - Unscored (PS4) Nobody anticipated how much work building a new home would really take, and in a way, the entire game is about mitigating everyones disappointment. The truth is that Andromeda itself isnt the promised land players hoped for either, but there is a lot thats good in this flawed new frontier for Mass Effect. The question is: will you play long enough to find it? Generación Xbox - Felipe Ubierna - 9. 2 / 10 (XB1) After 5 long years of waiting, Mass Effect returns in a big way with a new title that meet our expectations. A more polished combat system, good RPG elements, an intriguing plot and a high level secondary missions that lay the foundations of this new story. It does not reach the perfection, but it is one of the best games that we have been able to play this generation. GamePlanet - Chris Brown - 7 / 10 (PC) Judged purely on its own merits, Mass Effect: Andromeda is a good game. But this is BioWare, and Mass Effect being merely good feels like a failure. It's a little clumsy in places, and daft in others, but I found it mostly endearing despite these quirks. Oyungezer Online - Utku Çakır - Turkish - 5 / 10 (PC) Mass Effect Andromeda is a souless and a poor game that gets overwhelmed by the success of its predecessor. It's bug filled gameplay, non-inspired storytelling and horrible animation quality makes it one of the the biggest disappointments of all time. Will we ever see a new Mass Effect game? To be honest I couldn't care less after Andromeda. Cheat Code Central - Lucas White - 3 / 5 (PS4) There's a decent game in here somewhere, but Mass Effect: Andromeda feels like a collaboration from Mass Effect fans rather than a group of known and established developers. GameSkinny - Synzer - 9 / 10 stars (XB1) The negativity around the game baffles me, because I have had an overwhelmingly positive experience with it. I guess that's why they're called opinions. If you are a fan of Mass Effect, RPGs, or open-world games, this is one to pick up. Push Square - Robert Ramsey - 6 / 10 (PS4) Mass Effect deserves better than Andromeda. The series has stumbled into a new generation, weighed down by tedious open world tropes and a catalogue of performance issues on the PS4. That said, it's not quite the disaster that some would have you believe. There really is a good Mass Effect game here, complete with endearing characters and great combat, but it's buried beneath a mountain of unnecessary clutter. In time, patches may sort many of its problems out, but until then, we can only recommend Andromeda to the BioWare faithful. PCGamesN - Kirk McKeand - 8 / 10 (PC) If you look at it as a reboot, a starting point for the series, there's lots of promise in that future. The first Mass Effect had countless problems, far more than here, but that will always be remembered as a classic, despite leaving similar threads hanging. Ultimately, this is a story about laying the foundations of a civilization, and it feels like BioWare were doing the same for the future of the franchise. In that way, these RPG developers have become Pathfinders themselves. GameCrate - Nicholas Scibetta - 7. 4 / 10 (PC) Mass Effect: Andromeda manages to feel both overloaded with content and spread too thin. There are great battles to be won, puzzles to solve, and satisfying social interactions, but they're hidden behind layers of presentation problems and tedious travel times. SA Gamer - Garth Holden - 8 / 10 (XB1) Get ready for a whole new galaxy and more problems than you can shake a soap opera at. EGM - Ray Carsillo - 6 / 10 (XB1) There is a strong core of characters and story bedrock laid down in Mass Effect: Andromeda, but between questionable design choices, boring missions, and glitches galore, its hard not to view BioWares journey to a brand new galaxy as anything less than mission failure. NZGamer - Keith Milburn - 7 / 10 (PC) Exhilarating combat, marred by awkward interactions and pervasive bugs. Guardian - Jordan Erica Webber - 3 / 5 stars Problems are inevitable in a game of such epic proportions but there is a lot here that will make you want to keep playing GBATemp - Austin Trujillo - 5. 9 / 10 (PC) They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In Andromeda, I was beholden to beautiful environments and robust gameplay, yet marred by inhuman animations and a story more loose than spare change in a long woolen sock. Andromeda is a galaxy of empty promises and one I could not find enjoyment in. The Escapist - Ron Whitaker - 3. 5 / 5 stars (PC) Mass Effect: Andromeda is a game that takes few risks and pushes few boundaries. It's a Mass Effect game designed to make fans of the series feel at home, but technical issues and lackluster writing leave it feeling like a missed opportunity to regain the prestige the franchise once enjoyed. Azralynn - Azralynn - 79 / 100, Written (PC) Andromeda builds on most of the things I liked in the earlier Mass Effect games and exceeds at creating more satisfying gameplay mechanics. It's a real shame that the game didn't get more polish in the character animation department, but if you can look past all these issues there's still plenty of fun to be had with it. VGChartz - Brandon J. Wysocki - Unscored (XB1) Mass Effect: Andromeda is like a good book that you dont want to put down, nor do you want it to end. The litany of complaints and problems are little typos or creases in the pages. Youd be hard pressed to miss them, but you gladly look past them to continue the stellar experience. Cerealkillerz - Gabriel Bogdan - German - 7. 5 / 10 (PS4) Mass Effect: Andromeda is an action-packed parody of the previous titles. Besides countless technical issues it feels like the developers really don't know where to take the series. If you're looking for a thrilling story or thoughtful dialogues, you'll probably be disappointed. Action-Fans will still get some carefully thought out Gameplay-mechanics and a fun multiplayer-part. Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 7 / 10 (PS4) At the end of the day, Mass Effect: Andromeda isn't bad so much as it is disappointing. The core gameplay has been improved from Mass Effect 3, and the multiplayer is almost worth the price of admission on its own. Alas, it's dragged down by a weak presentation, poor plot, and a general lack of ambition. Gamerheadquarters - Jason Stettner - 7 / 10 (XB1) I look forward to the next entry, but there are steps needed to bring Mass Effect back to its proper form. ZTGD - Ken McKown - 8 / 10 (XB1) Mass Effect Andromeda is a great game with some serious side effects. IBTimes UK - Holly Nielsen - 3 / 5 stars (XB1) To the credit of BioWare, despite Andromeda's many flaws I still wanted to visit the planets with my teammates, to progress and colonise new worlds. It is a solid game, but one with issues that appear worse than they are due to high expectations the developers have earned from a stellar history of better RPGs. Would I be thrilled about the prospect of another game set in the Andromeda galaxy? Probably not. However, if future games can push past the familiar and embrace ideas of the "unknown" that Andromeda aspires to, but never realises, then I do think the series still has something to offer. Game Rant - Denny Connolly - 4 / 5 stars (XB1) Mass Effect: Andromeda starts out just a bit too slow, but is sure win over fans of sci-fi action RPGs once the real open-world space exploration begins. Gadgets 360 - Pranay Parab - 8 / 10 (PS4) There are several annoyances with the game, but, overall, BioWare has delivered yet another stellar role-playing experience with a fascinating story to boot. TotalBiscuit - John Bain - Unscored, Multiplayer (PC) Pause Resume - Craig Shields - 3 / 5 (PS4) Andromeda isnt the return to form for Mass Effect that we were hoping for. Its issues are obvious from the opening few hours and if you can manage to accept them, Andromeda is capable of providing an interesting and combat heavy RPG. Use A Potion - Daryl Leach - 8 / 10 (PS4) I have no doubt that itll probably be one of the most divisive titles released this generation, but for me it certainly delivered on its promise of providing a compelling, action-packed adventure. Brash Games - DjMMT - 8 / 10 (PS4) It is not the best the franchise has to offer but its definitely a great start to a whole new trilogy and I highly recommend it to both veteran players and those who have never played Mass Effect before. GameSpew - Richard Seagrave - 7 / 10 (XB1) Once you get over the fact that its not quite as polished as its predecessors nor does it further the series in any meaningful way though, you can still appreciate what it is: a Mass Effect game through and through. Giant Bomb - Brad Shoemaker - 2 / 5 stars (PS4) Andromeda largely feels like a shoddily assembled facsimile of the previous Mass Effect games. Thanks OpenCritic for the review formatting help.

The second part It can be pretty difficult to decide on the kind of story you want to do sometimes. I hadnt expected the popularity of Slice to grow the way it did. But, well, it did. I was just doing what I had always done since I was a little girl. Getting myself into trouble, getting myself out of it, and in the process acquiring that which I desired. Information. Ever since I could speak, people have been wanting to keep things hidden from me. I suppose it means Im still childish if I admit that I cant handle being told no, but its true. Dangle something in front of me so tantalizingly mysterious like that, and youll soon find me obsessed with it. Thats why I started Slice, it was originally just a little blog I wrote on using my old see-through Mac as a teen. I used it as part diary, part National Enquirer for my neighborhood. Basically, a lot of people in my home town who were aware of it became addicted to it. Others, well… they fucking hated it. Understandably I guess. But, I mean, its their fault for making themselves so… interesting for lack of a better word? I guess Ill leave it at that. Ill spare you the boring details of how it led me to the kind of life I wallow in now. One of a contradictory ‘shut-in by day, extrovert Renaissance woman by night. Does that sound pretentious? It should, because it is. Those arent my words, but that of my co-editor and business partner, Philip. Publicly, I have him run the company side of things. Legally, hes both the chief editor and founder, in order to conceal my preference for anonymity. I have two things that make me a better journalist than what you see out there in the pool of filth they call media these days. 1) My legs (and a good set of heels I suppose) and 2) the fact that those I deceive into narcing on themselves have never seen my face before. Last week, Philip had texted me out of no where in the middle of the night. He wasnt interrupting my sleep or anything. I had been up since four in the afternoon and still had that exhausted disheveled look on my face, staring at my computer screen meticulously researching random unimportant shit and generally wasting my own time. Me and him had been debating back and forth for a while now on what angle we should approach the upcoming IACS seminar from. You know, the same one where Monterrey decided to turn the whole thing into “Lets See If I Can Start WW3: The Movie”? I opened my phone, and read his message as the light from the array of screens assaulted my retinas and danced over my face in the depths of darkness that was my apartment bedroom. “So, try not to react badly to this but…” His text message warned. “Maybe we should explore something tangentially related to the seminar, rather than the seminar itself? ” I let out a small cackle and shook my head in disbelief. I had been trying for a month, to no avail, to get a job as a hostess where the seminar was being held. Under a pseudonym of course. For the last few weeks Ive been consistently told by the employer that all positions are currently filled. This flies in the face of what numerous former employees of the hotel told me when I contacted them. They informed me that about two thirds of the wait staff were abruptly let go without warning a day after it was announced to them that the seminar would be held at their establishment. Thats why I even tried applying in the first place. Hearing this lie told to me, I decided to check in at that very hotel for a night to see if it were true. And to my disbelief, it was. The hotel was being run smoothly, almost, surgically. The new staff seemed nice. In a dystopian kind of way. It kind of felt like they were smiling at me only when I was actually looking at them. I had this strange sense they were scowling at me when my eyes were averted. Let me help you understand why this doesnt make sense to me. They fired all the waiters except those with the most time with the business. They fired all the cooks. They fired all the valets except for two. They fired the general manager of the hotel itself. I was told about the mass layoff the day it happened by a source. I applied a day after that. Within a day, they had already filled all of those positions to their satisfaction. No wanted ads, seemingly no interviews, no listings on job search sites, etc. Nothing. It was as if these new employees just showed up to work out of nowhere and started waiting tables or cooking steak. I had spent the last few nights putting together a new fake identity so I could try getting another room on the last night of the seminar next week. I had paid a lot of money to people on the dark web for this fake drivers license and Canadian passport. And now, Philip was asking me to give up and write about a ‘safe, ‘tangential topic vaguely related to space militarization. I texted him back, “Sometimes I cant fucking believe you. “ He did that thing when youre texting someone and theyre typing this big ass message but you dont realize it and as soon as youve hit send they hit send and… God its really annoying. Philips still a Boomer you have to realize. He doesnt “get” technology yet. Or maybe he willfully refuses to understand it like most old people. Hmm. Either way, his giant wall of text he sent me tried assuaging my anger. “Im not trying to stop you from pursuing the story you want. I would never do that Clem. I mean, not anymore. Look, trust me I learned my lesson with that whole fight we had over you narrating the weekly recaps. BUT, I think I have something better than the seminar itself. I might just have the reason behind that whole hotel staff business. Will you hear me out? “ I texted him back as I let out a long, frustrated sigh. “Fine. What? ” And then I sent him one more. “And it seriously better be good or Im blocking your number for a week again. ” His reply read, “I have this guy in Needles, California. Ever heard of it? ” I told him, “No but it sounds like one of those crappy little towns between Barstow and Vegas that no one ever visits. ” Philip confirmed in response, “Well, it is one of those crappy little outskirt towns. But thats not the point! There was this whole supposed UFO crash and some sort of military helicopters came and took it away and blah blah blah. ” “Philip I AM NOT doing a UFO story. ” I told him. “I know I know“ his message read. “Thats not the point! Theres this conspiracy theorist guy from Nevada, you know one of those Coast To Coast types? Anyways, hes been telling me that he has some sort of bombshell information that connects the Needles crash with your seminar shadiness. ” I groaned, resigning myself to at least let him tell me. “Im listening. What is it? ” I asked. A picture appeared on my phone. It was an airliner sitting on a tarmac at dawn painted lily white with a single red stripe along the fuselage, with no company branding or logos. “Whats with this airliner? ” I asked him in my text. “Did you know that a Janet Airlines flight arrived at a private airport near Santa Rosa the night before everyone was fired, and offloaded the exact number of people needed to replace everyone? ” Philip informed me. I was silent for a small moment. I looked at the posters on my wall drenched in neon-purple light, taking inventory of what was just said to me. I texted him back one more time, “Philip, you know I love you right? ” Flash forward to the next day, I had tried sleeping off some of my insomnia from 6 to 10 AM. I tried getting up at 10:15. Not having it. Then I tried 10:45. Again, absolutely not. So I did what I always do when Im in a bind to meet with a source and my Circadian rhythm isnt cooperating with me. Dont judge. I mean, please dont judge. I mean… Hmm, well. I did a line. Im not proud of… well, no. Fuck you, I am proud of it. I mean Im not, I mean… not, fuck you? Look, either way when a story like this is in front of me and my insomnia is in the way, I… I dont have to justify this with you. And Im not going to. After the white lady had gotten me out of my funk I finally took a shower, got dressed, and hopped in my car and headed down the road to the Silver State. Philip gave me the guys address and phone number as I left the Southland. “Frank Monterrey? “ I said to myself out loud as I read the text. I pulled over and texted Philip back, “Is that… really his name? “ “I guess so. No relation obviously. Just one of those things in life. “ He said in reply. I continued on my journey northeast along the I-15, passing highway patrolmen, smart cars, and meth-lab RVs along the way. Noticing the run down watering holes filled with cheap signage set in contrast to flashy over priced watering holes with pretentious signage, all posed against the backdrop of the California desert and its Joshua trees. Every now and then, I would take a peak at the day time moon piercing through the blue firmament gazing back at me. I wonder, how hard would it be to get approved for a visit to Armstrong? I doubt I have the money though. I kept glancing at it, wondering to myself, are you looking at it too Will? The cokes getting to me at this point I think. I focus my attention to other things, turning the radio up. Lets see. Talk radio? “You simply dont know what youre fucking talking about! Explain to me exactly how it aint socialism you dick! If its government, its socialist! Thats why the founding fathers gave us social security, to teach us responsibility. ” No. Umm, pop? I pressed down on the seek button. The tired “Millennial whoop” burst through the speakers of my car. People who are 35 pretending to be 15, dressed in neon clothes reciting their modern chant to their contemporary God. Safe, marketable, unoffensive, nothing. Where is this guys house? I double checked my GPS. It wasnt working suddenly. I hadnt paid attention to it for a bit. It was flickering back and forth between my cars position and where my destination was. Doesnt make any difference, Im near the exit anyway. The satellite radio I was listening to began screwing up as well. I couldnt understand what the lyrics of the song were trying to say anymore. They were verbalizing something, but it was all mushy. I turned it off, as it strangely made me feel drowsy. Dont want to fall asleep at the wheel. I glanced back at the daytime moon again. What is that? I thought to myself. There was this black speck gliding along the rim of Lunas spherical shape. Its not a bug. It… cant be an airplane. This is Nevada I suppose, Im liable to see a UFO at some point. I returned the view of my eyes back to the road, and finally took my exit. His “house” was a beat up RV, not unlike the meth labs on wheels I mentioned earlier. He had encamped himself on a slice of desert in an undeveloped part of North Las Vegas, not far from the gate to Nellis Air Force Base. I parked behind it and began texting Philip to let him know I was here, just in case this guy decides to chop my head off. If that happens, at least Philip will know where to find the skin suit hes going to make out of me. As I hit send, I heard a bang on my wind shield. And then a dozen more in quick succession. There he was, fat, receding hairline, broken sunglasses, dirty polo shirt, and openly carrying a 9mm. “Hey! Hey! Hey! Youre here! Youre the girl? Youre the girl! From the news people thing? Come on, hurry up we got to go! Come on! Come on! Come on! ” He screamed at the top of his lungs. I slowly got out, somewhat regretting not bringing my own sidearm with me. I guess thats why you shouldnt take a hit of cocaine to wake you up in the morning. I felt a sharp edge slightly press into my chest as I stood up out of my car seat. Good. I thought, at least I have my knife with me. Hidden in the one place he (hopefully) wont try to grope. I stuck my hand out to shake his as the car door shut. “Nice to-” He man handled it like a maniac before I could finish. “Yep! Great great great! We really gotta go doll face! Theyre gonna be there any minute! ” He spouted off. “Who? ” I asked. “Air Force Special Activities Center! Illuminati enforcement bureau. Really high level dinosauroids. Far higher level lizard people than even the Governor. ” He shouted as he got into his RVs driver seat and started the engine. Or attempted to. Several times. I was silent. Dumb struck. “Youre Frank Monterrey, right? ” I asked him. “Shhhhhhh! Dont say it out fucking loud! Have you even run an evasion and recovery op like this before? Quite clearly not! ” He shouted. The engine finally turned over and breathed life into the vehicle. “I have… no idea what youre talking about. ” I said as I reluctantly climbed into the passenger side. I texted Philip real quick to tell him that I hated him now. As the man shifted into drive, I looked behind me into the interior of the RV. You know that meme from Always Sunny with Charlie explaining all the crazy shit on his wall and how its all connected? Yeah, I should convince this guy to let me take a picture of him doing the exact same thing in front of all that stuff back there because it would be a one for one. As implied, the RVs walls and windows were littered with a collage containing pictures of some spade-shaped aircraft, portraits of some women in Space Corps and Navy uniforms, a group photo of a few astronauts in their space suits in front of an American flag, grainy photos of a bizarrely shaped… satellite? Hmm. Finally there was an old Polaroid of a woman with an 80s-style hairdo in a wedding dress holding hands with someone in a gorilla costume. The entire quote unquote ‘modern-art masterpiece was interspersed with the occasional classified military document and incoherently linked together with red string and thumbtacks. “Were coming, were coming, were coming now you pricks. ” He said as the RV turned onto the road heading north. He continued to say something under his breath, “Bitch, Su, you bitch, hag, you hag youll finally see what choosing Squatch over me really means. “ My jaw hung out for a few seconds as I just took stock of what I drove over four hours to get out here for. I just met a mentally-ill stranger who uses the Presidents name as a pseudonym, stepped into his run down RV willingly so that he can take me God knows where so that we can recover something from the government in order to steal his crush back from the Sasquatch… I checked my phone again to see if Philip had replied yet. I was going to tell him when I see him again Ill be giving him a castration. But he hadnt responded to my last text, or to the one before that for that matter. I turned to ‘Frank and asked, “Listen, does this have anything to do with that airliner you told my business partner about? ” He cut me off before I could finish. “Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah. ” He motored off. “Were gonna get it, yes yes. Were gonna get IT. Oh man, haha! You wont believe how were gonna get it. “ “Uhhh, ok. How are we going to get ‘it? ” I asked politely. He then proceeded to pull his pistol out of its holster and wave it around in my face with the safety off. “Good old American freedom! Hail Odin for the Third Amendment. ” I corrected him, “Second. “ He began to talk over me. “Tenth. Anyways, you women never know when youre wrong especially when its that time of the month so to speak. Just like Su. Ahhh, yes. My lovely old Su. “ He looked over at me in that creepy old man Im about to sexually harass you kinda way. My hand drew closer to where my knife was hidden. “You remind me of her. Oh yes. “ I now regretted the choice of clothing I made for that summer day. My legs pulled away and slammed into the door as he tried to place a hand on my thigh. I reached under my shirt and pulled the knife out reflexively. Before he could bring his hand back to where his holster sat on his hip, I instantly lunged over and pressed the blade just above it directly into where his kidney would be without breaking the skin. “Keep your hands on the fucking wheel bitch! ” I screamed at him, my eyes tearing up in rage, my head and chest pounding from the adrenaline. The RV slowed down on the empty road we had traversed to. It was quiet. The RV stopped. He began to laugh. “Ahhh Su. Our famous lovers quarrels. Were not officially married until we have a few of those I suppose. ” I looked at him in confusion and disgust. “What is your problem old man? Im not your wife, or who ever youre talking about. Im from the news group? Remember? ” A tear ran down his cheek. He suddenly lunged towards me and started to shout at the top of his lungs, “Su, please God just love me and not that ape! ” He tried kissing me as his free hand pulled my torso into him. I stabbed into his side with the knife. And then again, and again. And then one more time until he stopped moving. He was lifeless on top of me now. I pushed him off, some of his blood gushing onto my shirt and shorts. It was so thick that when I stood up out of the RV, it escaped the fabric of my clothes and ran down my leg. Not a good look. I collected myself, thinking about where I was. On a back road in Nevada, a few miles away from my car. I could walk back to it, I thought to myself. I folded my arms as I leaned onto the door jam, staring at his body, trying to get myself to stop shaking. I didnt cry. But I should have. “How did you even come across that airliner? ” I said out loud, and lingered on the thought. I recalled the collage of conspiracist fuel he called wallpaper inside. “Yeah. How did you come across it? ” I said again, out loud. I pulled my phone out and texted Philip before I climbed in the back of the vehicle, “I need help. Now. Philip I really need your help now, please. Call me. ” The message said. I started rummaging around all his stuff inside. There was a strange version of the American flag draped on a small plastic table. It was white with blue stars and vertical stripes. It looked familiar, but I couldnt place my finger on it at the time. I looked underneath, finding a print out of a map. It showed a route from North LV to Needles to Santa Rosa, California and back. Did he actually go there? Did he take the picture himself? How did he know it would be there? I put it down and turned my attention to all the stuff on his wall. Who were these military women? Who were these astronauts? I unpinned the photo of the spade-shaped airplane from the wall and studied it, after a while glancing up to the grainy picture of the strange object and letting it catch my attention. I pulled it down next. It was shaped like… how can I describe this? Its like Im looking at a 3D image without 3D glasses. I pulled down some of the documents, beginning to think that this may have actually been worth it - kind of. If the red string was anything to go by, the document I was looking over right now had something to do with the uniformed young woman with glasses. It was a transfer order of some sort from a few years ago. Im not sure what the military would call it. It basically said this woman was to be released from the Air Force so that she may become a member of Monterreys new Space Corps. It said that she was to be promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Captain in doing so. It said her parent organization at the time was an intelligence squadron. Next to that it listed her weight and height. Next to that, her social security number. Next to that her last then first name. Hayek, Poinsettia. As I pondered over her significance, I heard the fake Franks phone go off. I walked over to the drivers seat from behind his slumped over corpse, and struggled it out of his pocket. It was a text from someone named Will, which forced the image of the Will I know to the front of my mind, making me zone out. Another notification sound snapped me out of it. “Where are you? Theyre almost here! This is the last chance for the We The People revolution if we miss this window! I State This Emphatically As Will Williamson, Individual, Sovereign, Citizen Of The Republic of Nevada, Independent AND Sovereign. Electronically NOTARIZED (Documented Permanently) In The Year Of Our Lord In Accordance With Common Law AND NOT ADMIRALITY LAW. ” After reading that bit of nonsense I went and scrolled up into the conversation they had over messaging and found the map coordinates of the destination fake Frank was supposed to meet him at before I stabbed him… to death. I decided that, well, since I killed him it might as well be worth it to at least see what he was taking me to. I collected everything off the wall and the table save for the flag and piled it together. I laid them on the passenger seat, got out and went around to the drivers side. I pulled his fat, smelly, stiff body out of its place with all my strength, nearly pulling my back out in the process. After he fell onto the asphalt of the road, I leaned over and removed his pistol from his holster. I checked the magazine. It was full. Placed it back in, putting the safety on. I got into the drivers seat he once occupied, and sped off to the location provided by his fellow freak. It took me another thirty minutes to get there. Civilization was far from here now. I was almost certain this had to border some sort of military range or government land of some type. As I arrived I noticed a beat-up sedan with a faded paint job to the side of the road behind one of the safety barricades. I pulled up behind it and put it into park. I stared at it for a minute, seeing if anyone was there. After a while of inactivity, I got out to take a closer look. There was no one inside. There were more documents and folders in the back seat however. Then I heard a voice call out to me. second half of the third part.

Love the idea of awakening the earth... I mean somebody's got to stop us because like the line, we must be crazy' we don't seem capable of letting the earth rest. Beware when fighting monsters that you yourself do not become a monster. For when you stare long into the Void, the Void will also stare into you. It was conspiracy theory that woke me up. This is not a post for the faint of heart: we'll be staring deep into the Void that Nietzsche warned us about. The title of this post isn't exaggerating, knowing these things literally drove me insane. We'll be discussing kidnapping, murder, rape, torture, and the worst this reality has to offer. There's no TL;DR, a bit that will make you want to vomit, and only one joke which isn't even funny. If you prefer pretending this reality is all farts and rainbows, this isn't the post for you— but please give me a few paragraphs before you go. This story starts July 12, 2016 and ends August 12th, the day I created this account. During this time, I watched every video linked in this post and then some. I stared into the Void so intensely that shadows began to move. Thanks to being an active redditor for far too long, I can retrace my steps by looking at my old account (which was actually my "secret alt account" for getting away from the free work I was doing as u/radd_it. The man in this story wasn't named Chris but it is the story of my falling. I've waited three years to tell it. Some events have been rearranged for narrative. Some quotes have been edited for readability. Some tidbits are tweaked from wikipedia. Deal with it. The End And this is a story about being free. DJ Shadow, You Can't Go Home Again Before we begin, I want to share what I learned at the end: all "terrorist" events are false flag operations executed in a way to intentionally-create gaping holes in its official story. This is so increasingly-true, from JFK to 9/11 to the Vegas shootings, that the implications are nothing shy of reality-shattering. It is one of the consistencies of this reality that should not be but yet, there it is. (And the shootings in El Paso that occurred during the writing of this post is no exception. I want you to know this is true going in as you'll see the proof of it along the way. The penultimate Streisand effect, this reality hides its rabbithole behind a deception so multilayered that its complexity cannot help but give away its preternatural nature. There is noise at every step on both sides along the path and it all comes with the same purpose: to keep you too distracted there to move farther along. The agents of causality will encourage you to look at this or that hoping you see no farther; I am inviting you to look at all of it or, at least, follow the path of my footsteps retraced. The topmost layer, our mainstream narrative, is maintained through no small effort but constant repetition in our news and entertainment. This layer reveals its motives most obviously in its portrayal of "conspiracy theorists" as crazy people. Why even look at such things if you automatically (and subconsciously) associate it with the mad? Newscasters scoff away anyone questioning an "official story" whilst any representation in our entertainment likely involves someone looking homeless with a sandwich board and a tinfoil hat. The internet is no exception. Stray from the mainstream narrative somewhere like r/worldnews and an "expert" will come along to "correct" you. Even an image search for "conspiracy theorists" re-enforces this: placards about aliens, tinfoil hats, and the quintessential face of controlled opposition, Alex Jones; all of which link to articles labelling those who believe such things as crazy and dangerous. What is Controlled Opposition? Controlled opposition is important to understand as we are surrounded by it. It manifests in three basic ways: Association with intentionally-crazy people Alex jones plays his role to create a mental barrier between the mainstream narrative and conspiracy theories by association. It is the same role as the pizzagate shooter or the upcoming area 51 raid. None of these happenings are organic but plastered across our news to maintain the mainstream narrative. Defining an argument and arguing both sides of it This is simply noise created to keep you distracted. In the mainstream narrative layer, this manifests as issues the political left v. right and divisive topics like abortion. (Are you pro-choice or pro-life? Pick one and you're either anti-choice or pro-death. This form of controlled opposition becomes even more pervasive and obtuse the further along the rabbithole you go. The False Friend This includes our news, our "satirical left" comedians, and those pushing false narratives masqueraded as science. I used to love the Daily Show in its Jon Stewart days, jokingly-referring to it as "comedy about the end of the world" but I can no longer enjoy such things since understanding how they exist only to make the fear propaganda more palatable. What good is a boogeyman if nobody knows they're there? Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here On the first page of the book of blue it read: If you read this page, then that'll be your death" By then it was too late and you wound up on An island of shells And bones that bodies had left And the one thing you taught me about human beings was this: They aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Modest Mouse, What People Are Made Of If the mainstream narrative is the icing, conspiracy theory is the layered cake; fear propaganda designed to be found by those able to break the programming of repetition. Like most people, I had never questioned the official story about most anything. I'd always had little nags and pings about this and that but never gave conspiracy theory much thought because I'd been taught not to. The madness came when I started to see how much of it rang true. But wait, I'm getting ahead of myself, let me take you back to where it all began. Back to when I was normal. When I was as innocent as Alice. I Got My Mind Set And if you go chasing rabbits And you know you're going to fall Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar Has given you the call It called Alice When she was just small - Jefferson Airplane, White Rabbit I don't remember how I came across it but my White Rabbit was this very testimony from a MKUltra survivor. I'd never heard of MKUltra before so I had little context for the horrors being described— and trying to find out escalated into an unexpected adventure. MKUltra was a CIA operation that began in the 1950s, mainly under the supervision of German scientists imported after World War II. Experiments were run on humans intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations to weaken the individual and force confessions through mind control. Happening during the height of the Cold War, its goals also included the creation of sleeper agents. MKUltra used numerous methods to manipulate mental states and alter brain functions including the surreptitious administration of LSD and other chemicals, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, and other forms of torture. I can't even call this "conspiracy theory" as many years later, the U. S. government paid compensation to some of the victims. I was as disgusted as anyone would be but still heavy with denial and clinging tightly to lifelong ideas of normality. Certainly my government couldn't be that blatantly-evil. This is just some terrible relic of history, a mistake in the lunacy of the cold war, right? RIGHT? Alice has some questions she would like answered. The Habitual Rituals I still thought conspiracy theory as the realm of crazy people, so I choose who I listened to carefully. All I knew was there was something big that I didn't understand. I wanted to know more. I needed to know more. Ted Gunderson, once-head of the FBI Los Angeles division, was the first person who caught my attention. His involvement with the FBI made him seem a credible source— and he looks like someone's grandpa and grandpas never lie. After he retired from the Bureau, Ted spoke publicly about chemtrails, sex rings, but most often, ritualistic sacrifices happening all around America (and being ignored by the FBI. It was his association with John DeCamp that I learned of The Franklin Coverup and the 1993 documentary about it, The Conspiracy of Silence. (Thanks to this old comment, I know it was July 14th that I found it. Someone had posted to r/ObscureMedia the same vid I'd watched days earlier; the rabbithole kept beckoning. It mainly revolves around the story of Leonard 'Larry' King, a once-prominent figure of the Republican party who's now almost nonexistent on the internet. There were three key witnesses at his trial, most notably Paul Bonacci, a MKUltra survivor. I had barely found the rabbithole and most everything I'd watched so far had been sanitized for public consumption. Listening to journalists and whistleblowers did not prepare me for Paul's eyewitness testimony. Here is his testimony of those events. It's just one person talking to another but it is the most horrific thing I'd ever heard. I don't need to watch it again to remember his words: He was fucking him and he started to cry so he killed him. He was bashing in his skull and fucking him and he just kept fucking him after he was dead. Alice doesn't feel well. Alice needs to lie down a little while. The Getaway The event Paul described took place at Bohemian Grove, a restricted 2, 700-acre campground belonging to a private club known as the Bohemian Club. The Bohemian Clubs membership includes prominent buisness leaders, government officials, former U. presidents, senior media executives, and people of power. In other words, it's a secluded getaway for the ultrarich that's been around a long, long while. At the Grove is where I found Moloch, a giant stone owl and a centerpiece of ceremonies. Footage of those ceremonies is forbidden by the Club but our posterchild of controlled opposition managed to capture the annual Ceremony of Care. A lifelong agnostic, my knowledge of religion and myth was limited but I sure as shit recognize a pagan ceremony when I see one. Suddenly, Gunderson's talk of ritualistic sacrifice didn't seem so far-fetched. Not helping was Skull & Bones, a "secret" student society at Yale for those same privileged few whose initiation is alot of screaming about death. The people in this reality I had always found most strange had become rather terrifying but one question was quietly lingering: if these people are so death-obsessed, above the law and without conscious then how are any of these people alive to talk about it? Alice didn't have time to ask. She had stumbled, tumbled, and begun to fall. Twice Falls Babel It was my "friend" Daniel who called me on 9/11. The girlfriend I shared an apartment with had gone to work; I was alone when the phone rang. "Does your TV get any channels. It didn't, we only had one to watch VHA movies. Why? We're under attack. After a pause even Shatner would've cut short, What. was the best I could muster. It was a moment everyone of an age remembers and a moment those younger never had the chance to know. Not the event itself but the moment before when all you knew was you had no point of reference, no context, no experience to frame or guide the moment you were passing through. Those who didn't come of age before this moment can never know it as it's simply the reality they know. I was on my way to his house minutes later, the distance between us an empty, alien world. We lived in a college town and at 9am on a Tuesday, its streets were regularly a steady chaos. Instead there was no one, everyone presumably already glued to a TV somewhere wondering what the hell was going to happen next. It was half-true for our president, he was wondering what happened next to the pet goat. I was at Daniel's and also attached to a screen before the second tower was struck. The very first full-body panic attack I had ever experienced came a few minutes later. Like the towers, one moment I was standing and then I was not. The next week, I flew to NYC. My second time there, I'd already fallen in love with the city (and would eventually spend 5 years living there. I told myself that I was going to volunteer but in the honesty of hindsight, I went because I had to see it. I had to know that these things were there and not just images on a TV. Sitting across the river on a Brooklyn rooftop, the smoke had yet to clear. It rose from the ground just as the towers had: two pillars of black nothing went ground to sky as straight as could be. I was seeing it all with my own eyes and it still didn't feel real. What was concrete and steel were now oddly-motionless monoliths of smoke. Alice at twenty-two, scarred and hungry to understand. Same River Revisited In the wake of things, I was as ready and eager as anyone for any explanation being handed to me. I accepted it without question because the explanation came with motive, something far more difficult to identify down the rabbithole. In retrospect, I'm almost embarrassed how long it took me to accept these things. I say accept and not realize because at no point in my life did I think an airplane could implode a skyscraper but due to the cognitive dissonance of what other truths I'd have accept if I made that connection to what I'd seen, I didn't. As I fell, such connections became easier to make or, more honestly, harder to deny. I had broken my programming of mainstream repetition and faceplanted right into the trap that laid in wait. I was weeks away from seeing it but I was lost squarely in the "Deep State" layer, still looking at this reality in "human" terms and trusting most things to be what I'd been told. Loose Change presented things in the same bizzarely-cultish tone I had come to expect (and its makers won their debate with Popular Mechanics by being compared to Nazis. Coming dressed in more professional clothes were Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth and Pilots for 9/11 Truth. No longer able to deny the truths of these things, the official story started sounding quite different. On September 11th, 2001, a group of first-time flyers hijacked two planes and proceeded to make point-perfect course adjustments whilst flying at a speed that exceeded the structural integrity of the aircraft. Evading the entirety of the U. military during their 21-minute flight due to a series of coincidences bordering on ludacris (inaccurate position reports, false target reports, fighters launched the wrong direction, and simulated "war games" happening that morning) both groups were able to strike their targets with a velocity that two aluminium planes (density 2. 7 g/cm³) penetrated their steel target (density 8. 05 g/cm³. Despite never happening before or since, this asymmetrical damage sparked a chain reaction that lead to the symmetrical collapse of three skyscrapers at freefall speed. Two collisions but three collapses; the "deep state" layer reintroduces WTC7, a 47-story building which stood until 5:20pm that evening before also collapsing top-down at freefall speed. It was around this time that I made a request for r/ae911truth. At the time, before the new layout, there was nothing except am image that obscured the entire screen and linked to r/conspiratard. With no mods, no posts, no subscribers, any other subreddit would have been approved as soon as it was seen. Instead, I was ignored for 17 days despite messaging the r/redditrequest admins every few days to ask about the delay. Alice doesn't like being ignored. Physics Says No A&E911 was quick to offer another explanation for what brought the towers down: controlled demolitions. Their smoking gun is the remnants of a 'nanothermite' agent: a highly-combustible, ultra-hot compound so complex it could only be manufactured at a few select locations, all of which are operated by the U. military. Their scenario certainly explained alot more than the official story: the melted steel seen flowing out of the building would require a concentration of heat near-impossible outside of a forge. What didn't sit right with me was the logistics of such a thing. Preparing what A&E911 proposed happened before the attack had the same stink of impossible circumstance as those that allowed the planes to make it to the towers. Large structures can take up to six months of preparation and usually include such obvious changes as removing internal walls, drilling holes for placing of explosives, and wrapping columns with fabric and fencing. It's not a small task, especially to do secretly in a city that never sleeps. Unsatisfied, I looked at planned demolitions and another discrepancy emerged. All the towers that fell on 9/11 collapsed from the top-down; planned demolitions happen bottom-up. Comparing the collapse of WTC7 to a controlled demolition demonstrates this while raising another question: why does the demolished building create so much more debris than WTC7? Where did the buildings go? It's a question so obvious, no one stopped to ask it except Dr. Judy Wood whose book is titled just that. Conveniently-overlooked by both the mainstream and "deep state" narratives was that six buildings collapsed that day and looking at what remained in the aftermath almost alone proves her case. Three hundred stories of steel and concrete fell that day, where did it all go? There's only one video that I'm explicitly requesting you to watch and it's this 90-minute interview with forensics engineer Dr. Judy Wood. Things are soon to get strange and you should see the concrete evidence first. (Or is that the lack of concrete evidence. What destroyed the towers was a direct-energy weapon (DEW) another term for zero-point energy (ZPE) something Newtonian physics says is impossible. It's the only theory that explains all the phenomenon observed during the attacks and in the aftermath (and once you know what to look for, you'll see it everywhere. Ground Zero wasn't covered with concrete and steel because it was mostly "dustified" on its way down. I had witnessed the perfect crime, committed with a technology so far advanced of what's known that no one would even consider it. A technology so far advanced, it would be described better as magic. This massive demonstration of such a technology isn't the only example of the true potentials of electromagnetism. Similar effects have been achieved on a smaller scale by independent scientists like John Hutchinson and Joseph Newman. It was time to stop thinking about technology in terms of what's known but instead in terms of what's possible. I was finally satisfied with an answer of how but handed an entirely new quandry: where could such advanced technology have come from? A&E911 dismissed the DEW evidence which only made me even more doubtful of their proposed culprit. FOX pinned the blame on bin Laden less than a minute after the second tower was hit and months earlier there was Bill Cooper, telling everyone to expect exactly that. Little did I know I'd been quietly escorted out of the "deep state" layer and into the "Illuminati" layer where the true strangenesses lay. When Alice thought she found the bottom, she had only found a ledge. Back to the Future and to the Left Theyre inventing enemies— the first of whom was the Russians. Then there would be terrorists, then there would be third world countries, what we now call rogue nations or nations of concern. Then there would be asteroids and then the last card would be the extraterrestrial threat. And all of it is a lie. Werner von Braun, 1976 Bill Cooper was an Naval Intelligence Officer turned whistleblower. His wikipage reads like the resume of a madman but calling what was about to happen before 9/11 was enough for me to want to hear what else he had to say. He was the first person I heard talking about aliens and JFK. He looked angelic in his all-white suit but what he said about both was hard to swallow: we were contacted by not one but two alien races after our first nuclear testing during Truman's presidency and Kennedy was shot by his driver using a classified CIA weapon. Bill was articulate and sincere but I didn't know what to think about it. Watching the infamous " Zapruder Film " wasn't much help with its low quality jerkiness; to me the only oddity it revealed was the driver slowing to a near-stop between the first and second times Kennedy was shot, the polar opposite of what anyone explicitly-trained to protect would do. Gov. john Connally, who was sitting in front of JFK when he was shot, reported in his testimony to the Warren Commission that he "immediately thought that there were either two or three people or more involved or someone was shooting with an automatic rifle because of the rapidity of the shots. Oswald had denied it looking already aware of his fate, the same as bin Laden. Watching Oswald being shot by Jack Ruby just came across as staged. Here he is, the man who just shot the President everyone loves. We'll be escorting him from this place at this time in an open, flank position so he's fully unprotected to anything any of you want to do. And what's so funny about a deluded gunman? Everything Is A Rich Man's Trick offered up another explanation: multiple gunmen arranged around the motorcade, most of which miraculously-missed their target except for one near where Oswald supposedly was and one positioned in a storm drain at the end of the street. (If you only watch two of these videos, make this the other one. It had that same stink of impossible circumstance but reports of multiple shooters later explained away as "lone gunmen" was something I'd heard before; almost all mass shootings say the same. Patterns, patterns everywhere and not a drop to drink. I had no interest in burrowing through the same layered misdirection as I had with 9/11. I had given up on finding a definitive who and began simply struggling to find a starting point for all this madness. A Rich Man's Trick began its story around World War I with roots as far back as the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. The boogeyman had been relabelled Illuminati and their motive was simple: the power of the Dollar Almighty. It seemed too easy a scapegoat and it didn't explain why their parties had same obviously-occult influence that I'd seen at the Grove. Bill Cooper had made one point I couldn't dispute: What you believe does not matter. What you believe is irrelevant. All that matters is what they believe. I was 24 when I first suspected anything similar. I was wearing an onion on my belt and writing a post on livejournal (which was the style at the time) simply asking if the greed that motivated our wealthy elite was for something not of this world. I would quickly trick myself into dismissing the idea but, now falling, I again found myself wondering the same thing. My reality looked like a Venn diagram of secret opposition and my head wouldn't stop screaming CONNECT THE GODDAMN DOTS! Plans Within Plans, the motto of the Illuminati, became all I could see. Alice asked nobody if this was Wonderland. Nobody replied with a curious smile. Fred Astaire at Goats Fuck this post! This post can suck a bag of dicks! This shit is getting finished out of spite. Myself, around this time of writing The Void was staring into me and my cracks were showing. I needed something, anything to seem untrue. I needed the strangest of the fringes so I could laugh and dismiss it like I did with all of this before I tumbled. Something, anything so I could finally stop being bruised by the branches and ledges of the rabbithole. I thought I found exactly that in The Montauk Project. Wrap up every conspiracy theory you've heard in every sci-fi trope you know and you wouldn't be too far off. The inspiration for Stranger Things, it was an operation involving alien coworkers, time travel, and psychic warfare. Be sure not miss the bit about aliens getting drunk on Lysol and Drain-O. What Bill Cooper had put down, Montauk picked up. It's what introduced me to Al Bielek and The Philadelphia Experiment. Executed in 1943 but exploring similar themes, it predated Montauk by decades and its origins pushed the bigger story even farther: back to the inventor of inventors, Nikola Tesla, the man often credited with the first contact with extraterrestrials. Was this my elusive starting point? A most-eccentric man, the more you know about Nikola Tesla, the more mythical becomes the only word to describe him. He wrote in his autobiography that he experienced detailed moments of inspiration when blinding flashes of light would appear before his eyes accompanied by (what he described as) visions. Often these visions would provide the solution to a particular problem he had encountered. He was a man who knew how to know without knowing. When Tesla died, his belongings were seized by the F. B. I. and analyzed by John G. Trump. He assured everyone that "efforts during at least the past 15 years [of Tesla's life] were primarily of a speculative, philosophical, and somewhat promotional character often concerned with the production and wireless transmission of power but did not include new, sound, workable principles or methods for realizing such results. And yes, John G. Trump was the paternal uncle of exactly who you think, a connection I still wonder about becoming suddenly relevant. The larger picture was starting to take shape as everything began to feel oddly- abstract. Lost in an ambivalence of shock and denial, I went back to Montauk feeling that I'd missed something. Watching a tour of the base gave the stories more physicality but the docu-drama released the previous year was laughably terrible. At least, it was until they described an abduction process and it shared a few too many details with something that happened to me as a child. What was easy as an abstract became most-suddenly personal and my cracks became a twitch. Alice somehow still fell downward when the rabbithole began to spin. Rebirthday Crackers Shortly after, August 8th, three things came without warning. The first seeds of knowledge began becoming understanding: I was starting to see how the "nanothermite" found after 9/11 was there to be found and beginning to accept that there are no coincidences here. The next change was far less abstract as the terrors began manifesting around me. My always-quiet neighborhood suddenly became host of things I couldn't explain. Most were small, shadows shifting and maybe-gunshots or unexpected crashes always just out of eyesight. It was early on the 9th, the middle of a sleepless night, that I heard the screaming man from somewhere I couldn't identify. His tortured cries were clear as he screamed oh god why won't anybody help me? I ran home and had a phone in hand before stopping to think what I could possibly say. "Hello, 9-1-1? I think there's a cult sacrifice happening outside my home but can't tell you quite where. That was the third change, I suddenly became unable to sleep and would be awake from the morning of the 8th until the evening of the 11th. As all I could feel was energy I didn't understand being channelled into me, I was always-exhausted but never properly-tired. I would lay in bed, staring at the wall, and by the night of the 10th all I wanted was to make it stop. Mere hours later, no longer able to contain the energy and the madness, I signed off with a post titled simply This is Hell. Satan is here. The floods are coming. (It would be the first time I'd use the phrase "Everything you know is wrong. My head was filling with terrible fates and I was unable to shake the sensation that something was targeting me, that something was coming for me. Even walking became tricky as my occasional twitches accelerated to full-body spasms. Again I tried to calm myself with sleep but again to no avail. By 5am on the 11th, my panicked state had not changed. Desperately clinging on the sanity I had left, I tried to call the only person I could at that hour: my grandmother. I pulled up her number and hit the 'Call' button. The phone momentarily switched to its Calling... screen before immediately cancelling the call. I checked for signal: all bars full. I hit the 'Call' button again and the phone momentarily switched to its Calling... screen before immediately cancelling the call again. This wasn't something it had done before. I felt faint, so after a short pause to steady myself, I hit the 'Call' button a third time. And I promptly and completely lost my fucking mind. It was the a trivial nothing but the last straw this camel could bear. I had stared into the Void too long and madness had won. Alice isn't here. Alice went away. Alice is gone. The Day A New Moi What happened next is something I'm no longer writing about as it's already well-documented and just as long a story in itself. After a month of free-falling, the bottom of the rabbithole welcomed me with the warmth of a brick wall. I finally landed as ungracefully as possible but it was there that the seeds of understanding began to bear fruit. It was the 12th before I managed to fully return, to home and to sanity. The fruit sprouted trees as I finally saw what I had failed to see: everyone baking this cake of conspiracy is lying and nothing of such complexity manifests organically. I had found the simple solution I sought, the understanding that I now so desperately needed: an inhuman consciousness is also playing the game and they reveal themselves by being too good at what they do. Throughout all the plans within plans there was but one true pattern: fear for the sake of fear. Seeing how the same patterns and themes had been interwoven into my own life, I was ready to accept that my reality wasn't what it pretended to be and I couldn't help but share what I seen with anyone who would listen. I began shouting we're not alone here and everywhere replied the same, proclaiming "that's not true. while reacting exactly as if it were. The admins would finally give r/ae911truth to u/goata_vigoda and I couldn't help but laugh in their collective faces while asking if they knew how obvious their timing was to me. They answered my question by banning the bots I'd run for years which I assume meant "Yes. I was automatically banned in r/MandelaEffect and r/GlitchInTheMatrix and became instantly-popular in places like TopMindsOfReddit, something I rather enjoyed. Many friends went suddenly silent while my mother re-introduced herself to my life just long enough to disown me for asking a question. And just in case these irrational reactions weren't enough to convince me, my housemate was briefly replaced by another entity. What can I do about these things? Nothing but laugh because I understand the why. I have seen the only motive here. Fear for the sake of fear is frightening to me no more. I'm playing my own game now. What's fun to me now? Helping others see these truths without having to do the stare. I am Alice's smirking revenge. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to retire. I've been thinking about settling somewhere secluded and these caves should be real cheap by now. With thanks to those who listened to me complain my way through writing this, the eponymous Santigold album that I've had on repeat, and to you for falling through it all with me. Even if you only read through all of this, you deserve some kittens.

OVERVIEW: China is still a shithole, wow who knew, wait Jinping! NO! plea- REDACTED] In all seriousness, China is still a country ruled by despots, ravaged by civil war, and crawling with regionalism. Chiang-Kai Shek's Republic is on the verge of collapse, and many of the officer corps have revolted, establishing the Chinese Liberation Army, while Mao Zedong's forces avoided encirclement, and so did not need to undergo the Long March, allowing them to root themselves in southern China. In the west, the regional warlords have taken a strong hold, and all attempts to liberate the west have failed thus far. In the east, Japan still took Manchuria and established the Empire of Manchukuo, and in the North, an aggressive, expansionist Mongolia has claimed much of Inner Mongolia, and has taken overlordship of Russian-dominated Tannu Tuva. And now a new threat arises, one more insane than all the others. THE EAST: Where much of the "superpowers" do battle. It is here the CLA, PRC, Republic, and Manchukuo engage in frequent skirmishes for control of territory and industrial wealth. Currently the Republic is on the backfoot, but with sufficient military reform, they can push back the revolutionary armies to the west, and eventually drive off Japanese influence. REPUBLIC OF CHINA: The Republic is not in an easy place. Back in the twenties, Mao Zedong's communists rose up, and the Republic was unable to combat them in this timeline, resulting in much of the south being lost to them. In response, Sun Liren and loyal officers and soldiers take control of Shaanxi, quickly annexing neighbouring warlords and towns into their own revolt, the Liberation Army. Now Chiang-Kai Shek's once mighty Republic is on its knees. Chiang's first problem is the political side of things. There are those in the government who see him as incompetent, failed, and just a terrible person. Some would like the revolutionaries to march into Beijing and claim control of China, while some would rather see a true Republic instated, but these few keep it quiet, as the last ones to question the "Republic" part of the Republic of China were either killed secretly, or fled to Gansu. Shek's next goal should be rooting out the corruption plaguing the rather large army under his command. The funds meant to be used to further military industry, purchase foreign arms, or even pay the troops is siphoned off by unknown commanders and politicians for personal use, or invested into their own industries and businesses. Without this money, the Republican army is doomed to fail. The inflation rate of the Republic is astounding to many international observers. The average citizen needs a wheelbarrow of yuan to afford a loaf of bread. Fixing this, providing more social benefits and fixing unemployment would hopefully bring the populace back into favour with Chiang-Kai Shek's nationalist government, and hopefully unite the failing Republic. The Republican army is large, but untrained, and using weapons from the 1800s. This needs to change if China is to face off against the might of the Japanese Empire. The USA is currently struggling economically, but we could help them if we import American arms. Having some of the newly-made M1A1 Garand could assist China in improving their infantry's fighting capacity. Having a modern airforce (which is still biplanes thanks to a lack of united military research. could really help us take out the Japanese dive-bombers that plague our shipping lanes. Overall, the Republic may be on the verge of defeat and annexation by rival powers, but there is a chance it holds out and fights back. Be careful of waking the sleeping giant. THE LIBERATION ARMY: Sun Liren leads the most militarily powerful nation of the three main "Chinas. The Chinese Liberation Army was formed when disgruntled army officers and their regiments decided they had enough of Shek's terrible military campaigns against the warlords and communists, his disastrous reforms, and his neglect of the Japanese threat. They established their base in Shaanxi and quickly eliminated the local warlords by luring them into peace negotiations and then killing their forces. They are still plagued by the Shanxi Clique's guerilla fighters, as the remainder of the warlord troops cling to whatever independence they have left. Politically, the CLA is unpopular with the locals, who would rather the utopian vision of the PRC and Mao Zedong, but a few rifle rounds will make quick work of the revolt in the east, right? The CLA is divided between the fascist supporters, lead by Wang Jingwei, and the military that is currently in control, lead by top general Sun Liren. This divide is worsening by the day, as the fascists want an East Asia dominated by China, and the military just want to settle for the status of "Police of Asia. seeking to keep the peace, and maybe establish a sort of pact to prevent further war in the region. Both can agree that the warlords and Mongolia must be evicted from Chinese soil, and so have prepared a vast army of experienced and well equipped (well equipped by 1936 Chinese standards) soldiers to retake the west and north from the hostile invaders. Industrially and economically, the CLA is not doing so well. Although they managed to seize some production lines when taking over Shanxi and Ordos, their overall productivity has been decreasing as all able men are being drafted into the Liberation Army. While the strongest military on the Chinese mainland, besides Japan, the CLA has a lot of work to do in terms of industry and political unity. If the Liberation Army is united, then the traitors and Japanese imperialists stand no chance! THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC: The most popular with the common citizen of China. With Mao's new form of communism, focusing on the farmers and rural peasants rather than the industrial workers, the People's Republic has achieved a level of stability unseen across China. The people, especially the poor and rural folk, love Mao and his utopian vision for China. The People's Liberation Army still needs some work. Mainly made up of volunteers from the countryside, it has nowhere near the experience and quality of the CLA, and not even close to the size of the Republics vast conscript force. What it has is organization and unity. Where the CLA is divided between the military supporters and the fascists, and the Republic is corrupt and inefficient, the PLA is organized, determined, and incorruptible. They need equipment however, and this is where the PRC is most lacking. Due to focusing on the rural regions, the People's Republic has been so far unable to attain the amount of industrialized cities it needs to equip a peasant army. The majority of Mao's forces are currently using hunting rifles, rather than the imported carbines of the Republic, or the hardy bolt-actions of the Liberation Army. The People's Republic stands as a unifying force for China, one that the common folk may turn to, one they can rally behind, and one that can drive off the capitalists and imperialists, one that can unite the squabbling despots of the west. The Chinese revolution needs only a spark. EMPIRE OF MANCHUKUO: While nominally independent, the Empire of Manchukuo, under Emperor Puyi, is actually a vassal state of the Empire of Japan. In the 1920s, Japan seized Manchuria after a swift war with China, and placed the former ruler of the Qing Dynasty in charge of the nation. While Puyi continues to claim he is the rightful sovereign ruler of China, the majority see him as a traitor to the ideals of the Republic, whichever ideals those may be. The Japanese keep him in power as a way to keep the Manchurians in check, by making themselves seem independent, but it hasn't been helping much. a communist revolt, incited by Mao Zedong, almost kicked the Japanese out, but a quick landing in Darien and Liaoning overran the hastily-assembled Manchurian Red Army. This small revolution was crushed easily afterwards, but in order to keep power, Puyi had to give out concessions to his populace, without Japanese order, or even permission. And now the former warlords of Manchuria have banded together in an attempt to drive out the Emperor and his Japanese "allies. The Empire of Manchukuo is falling apart on all sides, and may not last much longer, in its current state anyway. With a failed Emperor at their helm, the Manchurians are destined to be slaves, for the time being. As the Land of the Rising Sun turns its attention to the mainland, and the American Pacific territories, the Manchurian people may soon be able to fight for their freedom and for a red revolution of China. THE SOUTHERN WARLORDS: As with Russia, I am not explaining the warlords here, they will be explained when the Chinese warlord tree is established. THE WESTERN WARLORDS: Gansu Republic: Established by true Republican supporters fleeing the Kuomintang-controlled Republic of China. It will have the ability in-game to establish a true Republic of China. MONGOLIA: Mongolia is a newly re-established nation, under Chinese control for the past few centuries, and then "liberated" by the Russian Empire during the Xinhai Revolution, Mongolia saw its path to independence during Russia's own revolution. It quickly annexed several territories in China, uniting the majority of the Mongolian people, and now only a few provinces remain in Chinese hands. These annexations and conquest have gained Mongolia no real allies, besides their own puppet, Tannu Tuva. With the Mongolian Republican Army established after deposing the regency council in the Mongolian Civil War in 1927, Mongolia now has a rather large force to defend its vast frontier with. Whatever the future holds for Mongolia, it will surely bring great prosperity to the once great empire. Tannu Tuva: During the Russian Civil War, after the first chemical attacks, around 80, 000 Russians fled into Tannu Tuva and northern Mongolia, and Mongolians found themselves a minority in their own province. The Russian populace disliked Mongol control, and so declared their own "Russian Republic of Tyva. quickly defeating the hastily established Northern Force and cementing Russian dominance in the province. The Russians, now threatened by the Siberian Republic, offered to become a puppet state of the Mongolian Republic. Mongolia accepted and now, the Russian Republic of Tyva is officially a sovereign nation. (Will be named Tyva in-game, not yet implemented) Mongolia now faces a new threat to the west however, and this threat is growing more powerful, the Mad Baron himself, Roman von Ungern-Sternberg. (More on him in the Russian Warlords update.

Free Online Waking the Sleeping Giant: The Making of a Political révolution française. 1 The sun ran across the mid-morning sky as forty splendidly plump cows made their way along the conveyor belt. Streaked with mud, grinding and groaning along rusty teeth the gears reluctantly fed the cows into the black barn. Salt licks held together by twine and wishful thinking descended along the track, keeping the attention of its passengers while mechanical arms busied themselves with the actual milking. Though the main holding tank was more corrosion than steel and leaked in a dozen places, it kept the product just barely cold enough for sentient consumption. Far across the field a dusty storefront turned its pocket neon sign on and an old woman gently slid herself into the rocking chair opposite the register. She nudged a small lever near her foot which was too painful to bend over to reach anymore, sending a small stream of ice cold cream into an empty mug before nudging it back off and reclining back to take a hearty sip. George ambled up as he always did right before lunch to chat with her; knew as well as she did that he was her first customer most days. “You really should let a few of my grandchildren farmhand before the seasons through, ” he asked half joking. “You know what George I think I will, Ill have them feed the chickens, ” she retorted. “Id be happy you had any chickens. ” “Ill buy a flock of chickens the day you get some grand-kids. ” He chuckled knowingly and went off along the dusty road in his buggy; having completed his morning ritual which had gone unchanged for the last 30 summers. To the casual observer these two were in the throws of blackest dementia but to everyone in town it was a welcome sight to see them still alive and joking. The suns were cresting a far hill when it suddenly sprouted dust. In the far distance the unmistakable rumble of hover-coach was getting closer. The old woman got up spryly and busied herself dusting off the paint chipped storefront. At a speed most certainly unwarranted the coach shifted down from cruising speed and slowed down enough for the parking feet to extend in preparation. With a jolt that sent small rodents scurrying in the fields, the coach landed bluntly in the middle of the road. The main hatch opened on its side and a smartly dressed but clearly anxious captain walked out followed by a mousy man with trifocals and an old-fashioned tablet. “I was just thinking my luck ran out but here come the thirstiest looking young men Ive seen in years. How many do you need? ” She inquired curtly holding up the cleanest looking jug of milk she always kept on hand for out-of-town visitors. The second man hurriedly threw a handful of dark red coins onto the counter and snatched the jug drinking greedily. The other man eyed her and the farm in the distance for a moment and then produced a small white scroll held in place by a green ribbon. “I have a delivery here for a Mrs. WoolWeaver. ” “Oh, Mrs. WoolWeaver was my mother you can call me Bonnie. ” Somewhat taken aback he extended the scroll to her. She took it from his hands and carefully removed the green ribbon which she threw on the ground where it flashed black and incinerated itself. Holding the scroll at arms length she hurriedly read it and a small frown came across her face. Having been through this process a thousand times before the man nudged his smaller counterpart who flicked a few switches on the tablet and it projected into the air an impossibly lengthy contract which was long enough to cover her ramshackle barn and field in its merciless blue glow. He spoke quickly and breathlessly, “by accepting the summons you hitherto subscribe and enlist yourself in the urban defense forces for a period no less than twenty common revolutions or you enlist one of your family members in your stead as substitute you release from arbitration the coalition of the willing. ” he paused pregnant but she said nothing and just continued meekly staring. The larger man continued rudely, “given your less-than stellar physical condition due to age or possible senility I recommend signing a son or grandson at this time to serve in your place. ” Her eyes widened and she said softly, “no I think Ill enlist myself. ” The small man was taking another swig of the milk jug but spit it out and said “the urban defense force can accept remunerative or in-kind supplies to buy a spot if you are unwilling to enlist someone in your family…. I think no more than 20 or 30 cows would suffice and Ill happily type it up so you get half of them back next season once the wars over. ” She smiled warmly between dentures too small for her mouth and rotten from age, “you got wax in your ears? Im enlisting tell me where to sign. ” The large mans face was turning redder than the moon when he replied “maam if youre seeking a physiological exemption from service for one of your loved ones we can work that out, I dont know who youre protecting but you have my word as a commandant of the urban defense force that they wont see front line action Ill pull whatever strings are needed to get him in the auxiliary but we must not leave here without resolving this presently. ” “I invoke the right of summary enlistment. ” At this the small man beamed while the large one scratched his head. He flipped through a few screens, typed in quickly hit the side button and a very different contract projected itself on the ground. “Under penalty of perjury and betrayal of the supreme council you invoke this right on today the 31st of May 2399 to be summarily enlisted, you attest that you are Bonnie P WoolWeaver, have lived at 105. 5 Burnt Mill Road your entire life and have no allegiances no any non-terrestrial faction or persons who would impede us in any way? “I do, I am, I have and I dont. Anything else? ” “Just fingerprint here on the pad and well do the blood work on site as youve requested. ” Bonnie walked over to the man with the pad and placed her thumb onto onto a glowing red box near the middle of it and a tiny needle extended drawing her blood. The pad whirled and clicked twice before dinging and turning green as it printed out an identification card which she grabbed before the larger man could protest further. “It is with reluctance I welcome you as conscript Grade 1. B., please be ready for collection in three hours I will send transport for you at that time. ” “Oh I doubt Ill last three minutes in this dreadful heat let alone 3 more hours, Im ready now if youre going in the same direction mind giving an old woman a lift to base? ” “Sign here waiving your right to recess and get in we have a planet to save. ” 2 Corporal Arbuckle slid shut the privacy shield from the main holding compartment of the coach while it lifted effortlessly into the sky. Tough he thought better of it he pulled out a receiver and squawked at the old lady “do you need to contact anyone to ensure the change of hands of your farm before we get to base? We have a blackout window of 30 days once youre fitted and processed and not even your kids are allowed contact. ” She smiled and said with a defeated tone in her voice “well mostly everythings automated down there, youall pay me not to sell more than a certain amount anyway to keep costs down so I really stopped caring about the farm at all once those subsidy checks started back in the 80s. ” “Understood miss. ” The large man checked a box in front of him declaring the farm government property and left it for a war-time ration committee to determine who got the cows and why. Somewhere in the cabin a small ‘ding was heard and the mousy man looked nervously at the larger one “please dont tell me you just hit quota. ” “So what if I did” he rebuffed. “Shes not in her right mind, she wont pass the mental physical and shell be on the next shuttle back to that run-down dirt hole in a week, tops. ” “And? ” “How do you sleep at night sir? ” “With two stripes on my right arm and a woman on my left, now shut up youre only here in an advisory role anyway. ” The small man absentmindedly busied himself perusing the summary file with no small amount of curiosity. 3 The base doctor was screaming at the top of his lungs over the vid-screen: “You think this is some kind of joke enlisting some fossil! I wont waste a damn penny on this relic, shes got cataracts, arthritis, osteoporosis, a bad back and hasnt had a solid meal since ‘92 when the meat ration was doubled by accident. ” Arbuckle sneered at the doctor “she enlisted herself we couldnt stop her. ” “Like hell she did this, I dont care how you pulled this off but I wont rest until Captain Combs and Rear Admiral Yen rip those leaves from your worthless arm you hear me! ” “Right after you have her equipped for duty and not a minute sooner. ” A devilish grin painted itself on the doctors face as he considered the words of his petty officer “fine, have it your way. ” About a hundred years ago it was mandatory for all inter-base communications to go over encrypted lines but all the base 10 locks on that call couldnt stop a determined old woman with her ear pressed against the doctors door from hearing every juicy tidbit. The doctor steadied himself and grabbed a handful of release and waiver forms from the bottom drawer of a locked filing cabinet – taking note of the half empty bottle hidden beneath it which he dutifully slugged before wiping his mouth on the white coat and returning to the patient area. “I have good news and bad news. Bad news is youre not fit to hold a rifle, also you voluntarily exempted yourself from the support roles so I cant ship you to the mess to peel potatoes or mop the canteens in central. Also you have a bum ticker, an abscess where a wisdom tooth should be and theres about as much calcium left in your bones as dishwater. ” “My ears are fine though, I take it, since you havent given me the good news. ” “Well yes, there is good news but I dont know how to explain it to you. ” “Ive been a midwife to a thousand barn animals with more manners than you. ” “Fine you know what you old bag, you remember the 6 Million Dollar Man? ” “Im old sonny-jim but not that old! ” “My immediate orders are to fit you for battle, you have to be front line ready in just a few days and the only way thats happening is if I build you a new body from scratch. ” “Youre going to turn me into a cryo-soldier? ” “Better, faster, stronger than any cryo-soldier before. ” Mrs. WoolWeaver giggled like a schoolgirl. “Thought you were too young to catch the reference? ” 4 Requisitions in the military are more art that science. Quartermasters can be bribed, captains put in for gear they arent trained for and doctors request doomsday weapons as a joke from time to time. 400 feet below the surface of Central hid the Office of Budget, Management, Lasers and Commission. The purse strings of the one-world-government were held rapt by a legion of soulless bureaucrats who would never see the light of day or even a single civilian for that matter as their role was paramount in being impartial and immutable. Mike 2351. 01 was entering his twentieth anniversary as senior budget analyst. In his tenure hed approved trillions of requests and denied a hundred fold more. Every single dime that came across his desk was to be scrutinized, considered and negotiated. Base commanders asking for toilet paper were just as hamstrung by the bureaucratic apparatus as generals demanding new tanks at the front. Hed put in for a new terminal sometime a decade ago and ironically was the same person to deny the request – so byzantine was this government office. He sat down at his cubicle gazed longingly at the simulated lazy sea waves that virtually lapped his feet beneath the desk. He turned the dial on his omni-tube and synth-coffee sputtered out. “No cream again” he muttered to himself as it burned his mouth. Across his screen yesterday a summary enlistment had flickered around 10am and he approved it without even glancing at the details. However today a requisition form attached to that same summary enlistment was glaring him in the face when he got to work. The numbers below it were usually meaningless to him; half the forms were illegible usually when filled out by field doctors but this one was different. “Form DD119-601932881” it said in precise black font across the top but he knew the form colloquially around the office as being ‘Super Soldiers 4 U. ” They werent allowed to read the news, infra-office communications were painfully regulated and even gossip over lunch could carry with it disclosure forms by desert which would make a judge quake in fear from seeing. Mike therefore wondered quietly to himself just how bad the war was going on the surface. He had noted a pattern forming with fewer summary enlistments and more conscription coming in daily. Ammunition requests were getting larger with more expensive calibers needed hourly. As he pondered his next steps, the vibrant ticking clock in the top right of his screen was turning from green to yellow as he had already used up half of his ‘consideration recess before a decision was made for him – by a supervisor who was sure to spend the next quarter repaying the kindness in mandatory overtime and rotating sleep berths. Mike felt crunched by time and considered his options, below a candid photo of his from back in the academy was his average authorization per requisition and time-per-case which were both threatening to change for the worse if he mishandled so large a request. So mike pulled out a quarter and flipped it, head = approved tails = denied. It landed heads and he checked the box manually on a signature pad near his mouse which dinged approvingly. While his costs had risen dramatically in an instant, he kept his per-claim processing time under a minute and that was why he got to sit at the beach. The next request was for penicillin but it was a civy order who had failed to properly check box 359 with “for personal or communal use, ” so he rejected it; forcing it to be resubmitted in a few years with the right paperwork this time. 5 Bonnie somewhat nervously sat at the doctors side as the request sat in ‘pending in vibrant white letters. “How long is this going to take doctor” she meekly inquired. “Sometime between 30 seconds and 30 years but I filed it as ‘emergency wartime requisitions so I think it got put on the top of the -” Before he finished the sentence the screen rang approvingly as her file was upgraded to “60193281-B. O. N. I. E. ” She looked at the doctor in mock surprise “did I do something wrong? ” “Not at all; lets get a move on to the crylo-later before Arbuckles pompous ass finds out. ” For such an old woman she kept surprisingly good pace with the doctor as they to the nearest elevator. They entered the facility and a gruff guard with a mechanical ‘third arm (as they were nicknamed) demanded their paperwork before progressing. The doctor proffered the form with a grin and the guard eyed him suspiciously before nodding and motioning to the gate behind him. They exited the door frame adorned with automated turrets and infrared scanners and headed onward to a brilliantly clean cryo tank which was empty. The doctor paged a technician to come and luckily one was on standby two floors above and instructed him to disrobe the patient and have them enter the chamber while they came down to put the finishing touches on the equipment. With the abrupt immodesty of a woman a fifth her age she did as instructed and got in the tank which she noted to be colder than the winter of ‘01. Despite being stark naked and painfully goose-bumped for all to see she made no attempts to hide herself, asking the doctor pointedly “so what happens now? ” “The technician will engage the machine and youll be frozen on a molecular level to be shattered and rebuilt from scratch as a superman… super woman. You will keep your memories and its more academic than anything to say that youll be a whole new person when were done. ” “What then doctor? ” For a split second his mouth curled in a frown and his eyes betrayed a moments hesitation before answering “youll be sent to help humans wherever we need you basically. Since the war is still going on I expect youll be deployed to whatever city is suffering the worst from the incursions and hopefully turn the tide or at least buy us some time…. Im not a general Bonnie I dont know for sure. ” She nodded politely as the technician readied the equipment. Her last thought before she was instantly frozen by jets of compressed CO2 was how George waited twenty years to see something the doctor saw in twenty minutes – a thought which would have earned her a painful hiding if her mother were still alive. 6 B. s instructor and Arbuckle sat in a dimly lit room the very next day as they waited breathlessly while Rear Admiral Yen finished up a teleconference with someone with more stars on his lapel than were left in the sky. Without warning the door behind them opened and through it stepped Yen himself flanked by Captain Combs – the teleconference was ruse Arbuckle cursed to himself. They both snapped to attention and were put at ease, though ease was too generous a term to describe it. Someone with a teaspoon could have cut through the tension in that office. “Go, ” with one word everyone else ran out on double time while the admiral placed down his cap and gazed calmly at Arbuckle. “Care to tell me why you used three years worth of budget in an afternoon petty officer Arbuckle? ” each word was spat out between jet black teeth which oozed chewing tobacco. “Permission to speak freely sir? ” Rear Admiral Yen considered the request, toying with the hopes of his subordinate, “permission denied. ” “I…. …... ” Yen had a penchant for power games and stared at him in amusement. “…. I made an executive decision sir in the hopes of defending our home more effectively. ” “Do the words ‘old dogs cant learn new tricks have any special meaning to you private? ” The field demotion stung worse than the fleck of spit that hit his face but he was far too afraid to wipe it from his face. “How about ‘court marshal ‘treason ‘dereliction of duty ‘gross insubordination ‘misuse of government resources in wartime any of that ringing a bell private? ” “Yes sir, ” he mumbled. “Good, I was worried I was losing my mind here for a minute. Always good to talk to the rank and file eh? Keeps up morale. You are dismissed. Report to Captain Combs he has a new assignment for you that better suits your…edilections. ” The blood drained from his face as he fumbled to his feet, a million excuses about to burst from his quivering lips. “Dismissed Private Arbuckle. ” 7 “Im afraid I didnt hear that correctly, say again sir? ” The Rear Admiral spoke slowly and carefully “Im sending you a cryo-soldier. ” The captain looked painfully embarrass but responded, “With all due respect sir…. ” “Out with it” “... havent seen action in weeks. All quiet on the eastern front sir, wouldnt a cryo-soldier be better suited elsewhere? Just seems like a waste of manpower and resources…... ” If Yen had the capacity to he would have burned a hole through the captains head across the vidscreen “... I accept this commission nevertheless. ” “Good, prepare reception in 2200 hours shes on her way now. ” “She, Sir? ” “Well she prefers to be called Bonnie truth be told. ” “Ill see to it that Bonnie is welcomed when she gets here. ” “Dismissed. ” Captain Jessie Vaulment IV turned to the cluttered basement he called his command center. He kicked over his XO who was snoozing on a cot next to no small number of empty pint bottles. “Wake up, get the men back here we have a surprise visitor coming tonight. ” “Whose that? ” “Some cryo-soldier reject, on her way to play soldier for a few weeks before I pass her off on rotation. ” “Dunno, could be hot? ” “Officer Teel you ever met a hot Bonnie? ” “No…. I have a great-aunt named Bonnie though used to be pretty popular name too back in the da. y” “Thats what Im most afraid of. Get a maid here too while youre rounding up the men, conscript one in town if you have to. This smells fishier than my wife after ‘soccer practice. ” 8 The parade grounds at the eastern front were overgrown with weeds and half the assembled men were missing insignia's, hats, boots and some even had full beards. They listlessly hung out near a helicopter pad which had seen better years as the XO checked and re-checked his tablet. “She should be here by now, ” officer Teel muttered. From far up above came the crack of a drop pod being blown out of a omni-carrier. In seconds a speck in the sky congealed into the sight of the largest, heavily armored cryo-soldier Knight plunging from the sky towards the men. Officer Teel gawked as it slowed itself with giant thrusters, coming to a gentle hover just a few meters away from the soldiers before dropping down with a thud that he felt in his bones. Decorum, even at this lax a post, was dropped as the soldiers broke into a spontaneous cheer seeing a Knight for the first time in years. The Knight announced in a booming voice, reverberating throughout the site, “oh all this for little old me? ” and out stepped Bonnie WoolWeaver in a synth-suit which contoured to every wrinkle. There are vacuums of space which have more air in them than there was on the entire field in that second. Try as he might, Teel couldnt resist bursting out with laughter. “Theyre putting grandmas in Knight armor? I knew the war wasnt going well but this is ridiculous. ” “Watch your tone young man, Im nobodys grandma and you may address me as Private Bonnie or not at all. ” The men excitedly chided Teel and Jessie attempted to provide an ounce of formality by exasperatedly saying “Private Bonnie that is your superior officer you must address him with the respect his position warrants…. if he is being an ass. ” She crossed her arms, “make me. ” There are few phrases in the human lexicon which hardwired immediate responses quite like the one Bonnie had just uttered. With no small amount of aping up from the restless privates who were clearly itching for a fight, officer Teel strode forward and before he could utter another rude word found himself face down on the ground. Through chipped bloody teeth he grunted “crazy old bi-” as she dropped a knee into his back knocking out his breath. “Im no harlot fellas but if anyone else wants to dance, Ill be ready just tell me where and when and Ill get my nice shoes on and come running. ” Try as he might to dismiss the thought, Jessie was starting to like Bonnie already. 9 Having a cryo-soldier made certain things much easier on the base all things considered. Suddenly every requisition they put it got green lit, mere seconds after being submitted. The mayor of Bonn, the closest town by far and not much larger than a village, had heard through the grapevine that the base was back in action and he had no small number of requests for the XO. Typically not one to rouse himself from the command basement unless needed, he had no problem sending Bonnie out on these fools errands. Day after day shed be summoned off base and come back later in the day with boring stories of the petty solutions to menial issues the town was facing. The men were starting to listen to her stories, first with amusement but soon in rapt attention as she was always very careful to divulge the identities of those she helped. She was very keen on helping out on the old Hurd Ranch, ‘reminds me of home. It took only two or three trips there before she spilled the beans that old man Hurd has 3 granddaughters who studied in the city but will be coming home any day for summer break. Suddenly there was a small group of privates who accompanied her on these excursions, always with their boots shined up and dress fatigues on. Day after day theyd return to base covered in mud, sweaty and filthy but invariably those same boys would have the uniforms immaculate by morning. In time the base resembled its old glory days of the campaigns of22, ‘28 and ‘30 when it was first commissioned. The barracks were swept, the kitchens sparkled and the men stood straighter in formations once best described as hodgepodge. Bonnie was one day looking at the camp serenely when she found Captain Jessie beside her though she had no idea how long hed been there he had the same sort of smile on his face. “Private Bonnie, ” he said quickly as the smile shrank from his face, “Ive received word that you are to be redeployed come Sunday. Our fleet suffered heavy losses near Ganymede and well theres not a single outfit on this planet which isnt being sent for relief. ” “Ok, the rest of the boys will be happy to see some action for once Im sure. ” “Myself and the boys were not requested. ” “Oh” “Private Bonnie it was a pleasure serving with you. If theres anything we can do for you before you leave tell me now. ” “Well someone is going to have to break the news to them that the Hurds have no grandchildren. I think XO Teel will be the most devastated to learn the news. ” “Im sure theyll manage somehow. ” A few days later Bonnie walked languidly towards the Knights armor once again and entered it reluctantly. As it hermetically sealed her inside, it sent the message to the omni-carrier that she was ready for re-deployment. A guy-wire strong enough to rip an island in half dropped from the sky and attached itself to her armor as it lifted off into the sky. She couldnt help but glance down below her and what she saw filled her with tears and made her wish the emergency escape hatch was manually operatable. Far below in the rolling fields of the nearest farms a thousand hay bales were arranged to spell “Well miss you Bonnie! ” with the exclamation point made up of most of the people from town. 10 The following day 25, 000 knights stood at attention. The national mall was packed with knights of every shape and size from the Tier I units with the tracks instead of legs to the Grade 9s with hover boots. Bonnie was ordered to gear up with the rest of the experimental corps. The booming registers of the Knight armor allowed her to blend in seamlessly and she thanked God himself for the anonymity, for the chance to be just like everyone else there. The President or rather the physical embodiment of the sentience that was President thanked them all for their duty, thanked the fallen legions for buying them time and cursed the capricious whims of chance and circumstance that lead them all there that day. It was a short speech and quite well received all things considering as it was literally the last thing any of them would hear on earth as thousands of wires grappled toughly lifting up the first wave into the fray above. Bonnie felt nervous as the sky disappeared below her, she burst through clouds and breached space along with the rest of the experimental Knights. They all filed into the gravity well of the largest omni-carrier in history, a monstrosity of slapped-together scraps from the last fleet held together with nothing more than twine and good intentions. While others ambled nervously in the clearly unstable carrier, Bonnie felt right at home. Speaking of home, those Atytherians they were fighting reminded her of the myriad rodents she had to take care of from a lifetime on the farm – a point pontificated when her first foray resulted in over 400 confirmed kills. Over the next six weeks Bonnie outclassed, outperformed and outgunned her every peer. On the battlefield she was a flurry of death and dismemberment, smashing the heads of the creatures underfoot with gusto as she readied her next clip. Nobody kept up with her and she would jump heedlessly into every new engagement like a woman on fire. Her armor sagged in places from the dozens of medals they kept awarding her. But off the field, when she got to take the armor off for some needed R&R she was as kind and compassionate to her peers as a grandmother would be. Their tears would be matched only by her own as she held grown mean in her arms crying for heir loved ones back home or shell shocked from the horrors theyd just witnessed. No matter what circumstance lead them to come to her for help, even if they pushed her away a hundred times first, those men would spend a lifetime extolling the virtues of Bonnie The Rat-slayer. For 20 years she pushed back the tide of war, single-handedly turning battles wherever she went. On the last day of her 20 year conscription, she was offered a blank commission. She declined and thanked her superiors for all the years of fun but stated that she was finally ready to go back to her farm once more. They still named an entire fleet of destroyers after her and one especially cheeky private published an extremely popular series about her adventures called “A Knights Duty – From Orion To Sirius And Back. ” Im sure youve seen at least one of the movies the books got made into too. 11 The old woman rocked back gently in her chair as the cows mooed in the pasture and the sun clawed itself back into the sky to start another day. The dusty old shack was in even worse repair these days and only the ‘o on the neon sign was still coming on but it was better than nothing and she couldnt be bothered to try and get a new one. The military pension was being donated to a charity started by her old XO which provided scholarships for inner-city youth to spend a few weeks on the farm ‘away from it all, as all the advertisements put it. Up the road came the unmistakable sound of a hover coach moving at high speeds. It came to rest, far more gently this time and out stepped the bespectacled mousy man who she remembered without fondness from all those years ago. His hair was missing in patches, but his lapel sported a single gold star which wasnt there when she last saw him. “Knight Bonnie. ” “Oh can it you windbag. ” “But Knight Bonnie. ” “One more knight out of you and Ill put you back in that coach in pieces you hear me? ” “What would you prefer? ” She was taken aback by the question, for all the fighting she had done over the years to get the hundred or so frivolous additions taken from her title, nobody had asked her what rank she thought she deserved. “When I was a girl I dreamed of some knight in shining armor taking me off the farm. I grew up and reality set in and I knew no knights were coming, but now that Im the knight it never sat right with me. ” “So….? ” “Well Mr. Smartypa- oh excuse me General Smartypants do you know what you call someone right below a knight? ” “I think they were called squires. ” “Well doesnt Squire Bonnie sound far less grandiose and pompous than Knight Bonnie. ” “Whatever you wish… Bonnie. ” “Much better. So how can I help you today? ” “Just stopped by to pick up a jug on my way to Central. ” “You drove 1, 320 miles out of your way on the way to Central to pick up a jug of milk? ” “…. ask that you sign just one last little bit of paper. ” She produced a far dirtier jug from beneath the table than she had first given him and he winced as lukewarm milk sputtered into it. “Theres a couple leaks in the line and the refrigeration stuff is on the fritz so this milk isnt exactly up to code but for some odd reason the health inspector never makes it over hear but I pass anyway. ” “Certainly a mystery for another day” he joked halfheartedly as he proffered her the tablet one final time. “You must be joking. ” “No Squire Bonnie Im not. ” “If you insist. ” She drew her signature in large, looping letters on the screen and he balked suddenly. “Mrs. Wool Weaver? I thought you never marr-” “Allow a modest old woman one last secret wont you? ” she interjected playfully. “Certainly. ” And with that the universal declaration of decorum and good manners was signed into being: formally institutionalizing the practice of good housekeeping across the galaxy on every military instillation.

Hi, Im putting this out there to see if anyone else has had similar celebrity encounters. Im not trying to cause any problems for anyone. Hell, Im pretty sure that wasnt even Johnny Depp now. I had always been interested in stories. I went to a state school and got an English degree specifically because I wanted to tell stories. I worked at it but I think a lot of people have similar dreams. When there's that many unique voices you get lost in the cacophony. I tried contacting publishing houses with my first novel and was ignored. I shopped my second novel around and was told politely yet firmly to fuck off. In my final year of college, amidst my struggles to launch a writing career, my mom died. I've heard that drawn out illnesses give the family a chance to make peace. We had no such luck. I got the call during midterm week, spring term of my senior year. It was my dad; mom had died. A car had hit her. She had been in a crosswalk and someone had blown through a red light. They plowed right through her and drove off. Dad had been so shocked all he could do was scream. No one had even gotten the license plate. The accident broke dad. He struggled to get out of bed, to feed himself, even to pay bills. I took on some of the burden to care for him but I struggled with classes the rest of the term. I lived locally and I suspect that some of my teachers let me pass out of pity. The investigation had been a recurring story in the local news. After I finished school, my writing career and dreams took a back seat to caring for dad. After mom's death, dad was able to draw on state assistance and life insurance but it wasn't enough. I got a part time job at Target. They kept me on reduced hours. I heard that it was a scheme the company used to avoid paying health benefits. The reduced hours made it easier to care for dad and entertain my dream of a writing career. I typically have Mondays off and use them to do household chores and work at my writing. Recently I had hit on a new idea to try and invigorate my writing routine. The blogging revolution had passed me by. I hadn't realized it but hundreds of writers had been published after building careers from blogs. They say write what you know, so I decided to put those classes on critical analysis to good use analyzing movies. I was sailing into new waters so I decided to take just a baby step. I would watch Pirates of the Caribbean and offer my hot take on where to place it in terms of Disneys ouvre. I had gotten the DVD from Redbox the night before while grocery shopping. I popped the disc into the DVD player, clicked through the menus, laughed at the jokes, ogled the effects and generally took in the spectacle. It had been over 15-years since the movie came out and I was still left feeling underwhelmed. I got up and returned the disc to its case. As I left the television room, dad moved in quickly to catch one of his daytime game shows. The theme music to Star Search echoed out of the room as I walked down the hall. I went upstairs to my room and sat down at my desk. It rested in front of a large bay window which overlooked our backyard. It was a modest space; back when mom was alive we had several parties on the patio. A bird feeder still hung from the tree. I had been so busy, it must have been several months since I had remembered putting seed in it. I booted up the computer and waited for Windows to update. I had already thought of a couple points I wanted to open my review with. I twiddled my fingers, but as expected, that had no effect on the loading speed. I moused over MS Word and opened up a document. The introduction to the review was simple enough. I gave a synopsis, carefully crafted to include several of the parts I intended to discuss in greater depth. With those paragraphs completed, I leaned back in my chair, admiring the small effort I had accomplished. The backyard vista bracketed the computer providing another source of distraction. I tried to jog my memory. what was I going to write? I had so many trenchant criticisms a moment ago. Fucking writers block always holding me back. I stared into the screen and started to feel anxious. Dads show continued to blare downstairs. The feeling coalesced, I felt like I was being watched. My computer didnt have a webcam, so that wasn't a concern. I looked behind me, just to verify no one was there. The feeling was still there I got up and walked over to the closet. Was there a monster hiding inside? Nope, nothing, just clothes. I walked back to my desk and plopped down in my chair. Losing focus for a moment, my gaze drifted outside. I found the source of that feeling; Johnny Depp was crouched in the tree, in our backyard, watching me with languid eyes. What the fuck was he doing there? He was rail thin, pale, and looked hungry. He beckoned me outside with a wave of his long, thin hand. Something else seemed odd about the situation. I had no idea what he was doing in our backyard. I opened the window and started to shout a question at him. Before any sound could leave my lips, he raised a finger to his lips and shook his head, silencing me. He beckoned me out again. Compulsion washed over me. Hadnt I enjoyed pirates? Didnt I long to meet the soulful eyes of the man who had played Edward Scissorhands? Why wouldnt I want to meet Johnny Depp? I closed my eyes and the feeling started to pass, and in a moment it was gone. It was replaced once more, with anxiety. The tree branches rustled. My eyelids flicked open quickly enough to catch Johnny Depp leaping down from the tree and running around the corner of the house. Something was off about his legs, something outside of the fact that Johnny Depp had been watching me from a tree in my backyard. His feet seemed to double at the crest of each step before condensing into a single form again. I breathed a sigh of relief. What a surreal experience. Was that real? Maybe some waking dream. Breaking out of whatever torpor had seized me, I realized that my heart was pounding, awash in adrenaline. My breath caught in my lungs as the doorbell chimed from downstairs. I bounded out of my room and hurdled down the stairs. That couldnt have been Johnny Depp, but just in case. In case it was Johnny Depp I wanted to make it to the door before dad. The bell rang again. I rocketed past dad in the TV room, cloistered away from any windows. “Someones at the door! ” I rounded the corner and looked down the hallway. Our home had a large stout door made of oak. Inset in that door was a piece of one-way glass. A convenient way to see who was there without them seeing you. Johnny Depp was at our doorstep. The doorbell rang again. I stepped towards the door quietly. The door was locked but the deadbolt wasnt set. I stepped several feet closer. Ding-dong! Another two steps. Ding-dong! Another step and I was able to reach out and twist the deadbolt. This just seemed to antagonize Mr. Depp. He began screaming to let him in. Fists pounded on the door. It sounded like two at first, then four, then so many I couldnt count. All the while, his head, framed in the window, stayed perfectly still, like an immobile bust. Not even his lips moved as he pleaded, then demanded I open the door. The pounding continued for a couple more minutes before it stopped. I had slid down the wall of the hallway waiting for Johnny or, now that I considered it, something that probably wasnt Johnny, to leave. I picked myself up and considered what to do Calling the police was out of the question. How did I explain what had happened in any meaningful way. Its not like the police were going to issue an APB for Johnny Depp in our sleepy Midwest suburb. I walked back down the hall and checked in on dad. He was sitting contentedly, watching a cassette of his favorite show, Star Search. I stayed in for the rest of the day and didnt go out that night. I let dad have the TV, something to keep him away from the windows. I sat in the corner quietly reading “No Country For Old Men”; the movie had been pretty good. I drifted off to sleep in the chair. Dad must have followed suit because when I woke, the TV was on static. Dad was sawing logs in dreamland. I got up and shut off the TV only to sink back into the chair. I woke up. It was Tuesday and I had work. I took a shower, got dressed, said goodbye to dad and made my way to the door. Pressure built in my chest as I reached out towards the door handle. Contact! I began to pull and met resistance. Was something at the door? No, the deadbolt was still in place. Sheepishly, I twisted it open and stepped out of the house. It was a beautiful Autumn day. I made my way to the bus stop and reflected. I shouldnt live in fear because bad things happen all the time. It doesnt matter if theyre explicable or not. The bus arrived and I made my way up the steps. I took a seat facing our street. I scanned the sidewalk while the other passengers boarded. An old man came around the corner. He toddled along, carrying a sign. He got closer and I could see it was a giant novelty check. Somebody was going to get a big surprise. As he rounded the corner to our street he looked back at the bus. It almost felt like he was looking at me. He was familiar, but an old man with white hair and glasses tended to blend in. Even if he was carrying a large novelty check. I got to work on time and stocked items in between my supervisor duties. I kept thinking, that old man looked familiar. I took my break and checked on a hunch. Im almost sure that was Ed McMahon carrying a giant novelty check on our street. I recognized him from the Star Search reruns dad was watching on the VCR yesterday. I called the house phone, it picked up but no one answered, just the theme song to Star Search followed by silence. Its not out of the ordinary for dad to ignore the telephone but Im getting worried. I took an early lunch break to write this up before I get home. I dont know what Ill find there.
